6-year-old finds out he's finally receiving new heart – his response is unforgettable
Sometimes it’s easy to look at our own lives and feel like we have it rough. Let’s face it, life does dish out some pretty tough challenges and it can seem impossible to overcome some of them.
But it’s always good to remember that you’re not alone and it’s very likely that someone else has it worse. Thus, try and be grateful for the things you do have. For example, if you have good health, rejoice! There are many who don’t. Or if you woke up today, smile. Not everyone gets the opportunity.
Now, this isn’t meant to downplay any difficulties that one may have, it’s just meant to serve as a reminder to seize the day. Always.
After all, if six-year-old Carlos Rolon from Worcester, Massachusetts, can do it, we all should give it a try.
Rolon was born with an abnormality in his heart chambers called unbalanced atrioventricular canal defect. In lamens terms, it’s a congenital heart condition. According to Mayo Clinic, it means “there’s a hole between the heart’s chambers and problems with the valves that regulate blood flow in the heart.”
It’s not something anyone, let alone a child, should have to go through.
However, Rolon has had four open surgeries before he was even two-year-old.
Though he was put on the transplant list in 2016, he was able to maintain a pretty normal life. That is until things took a turn for the worse and he was forced into Boston Children’s Hospital on August 31, 2019.
Still, his parents, Sheena Cossette and Carlos Rolon, did their best to make him feel as normal as possible.
For example, since Christmas is his favorite holiday, they wanted to make it special for him. Thus, his mom recorded a video of him asking for holiday cards while in the hospital.
“…we’re trying to make it as best as we can here,” she told Boston News.
It was quite a success. Rolon received more than 30,000 pieces of mail from all 50 states and even some from other countries. In addition to cards, he also received a small motorcycle from the law enforcement motorcycle club, Redlight King MC!
Since then, Rolon patiently waited for a new heart so he could make his way back home. Fortunately, on April 2, his patience finally paid off.
After Cossette raised concerns about how the coronavirus pandemic could affect her son’s heart transplant, their doctor later revealed that they found a heart for him.
“I think that was the biggest shock for me like, wow, it almost was so unreal,” she shared with CNN.
She was so excited, she recorded a video of her giving Rolon the life-changing news. Then, she shared it on Facebook with the world. Understandably, he’s simply speechless at times but thrilled nonetheless.
However, he does ask if it’s going to hurt but she reassures him that he won’t even feel a thing. In order to put his mind at ease, his father excitedly exclaims that when they go home they can go camping and dirt bike riding together.
“But I don’t wanna do camping,” he says, to which those in the room begin to laugh.
“Well, we’ll just go dirt bike riding, okay?” his dad responds.
Unsurprisingly, Rolon repeatedly inquires about when he can go home.
“His biggest thing these last few weeks is he wants to go home. He misses his family. We are a very big family and very family-orientated,” Cossette shared.
Just as planned, the surgery took place the very next day on April 3. It was a success.

“My first reaction was his color because his skin had a bluish-gray tone before the surgery. When I looked at him, his color was amazing,” Cossette says.
But although he’s at home, they’re going to take the necessary precautions to protect him from the coronavirus.
“We’re going to quarantine when we go home. Yes, absolutely…” she tells CNN.
We wish Carlos and his family the very best!
