Even during dark times, we still need to laugh. This sketch from decades ago really applies to the current worldwide crisis.
Breaking news: There’s a pandemic called coronavirus, and it may cause major disruption.
Ok, everyone knows coronavirus, and most of us have been affected in some way by it.
Things can seem kind of bleak right now. Many of us are social distancing, meaning lots of staying indoors. And to make matters worse, we don’t know when things will be back to normal.
It’s easy to feel out of control. But you know one thing we can all do? Laugh. Even through the worst times in history, humanity has poked fun of and made light of whatever problems we’ve faced.
One person who is currently brightening many people’s days is Carol Burnett, the 86 year old American comedian. But what’s weird is that it isn’t any new work that’s making people laugh.
Instead, a classic sketch from Burnett’s 1970s The Carol Burnett Show has been rediscovered. Anyone who watches it can’t help but relate the humor to current coronavirus events.
It begins with Burnett entering a kitchen set. She announces to her family that she’s home, only to find the place deserted.
Then she opens the fridge to find a roll of toilet paper attached to the inner door.
A note has been scrawled on the paper. Burnett reads from the paper. “Dear mom, your toilet tissue isn’t soft enough, so I went to the library, forever. Love Bobby.”
Burnett dismisses the note and opens a kitchen cupboard. Another roll of toilet paper is attached to the inner door.
This one reads, “Dear mom, I ran off with a motorcycle gang that had softer toilet tissue, Lulu.”
Then there’s a knock at the door. A mailman gives Burnett a special delivery. It’s another roll of toilet paper. Another note has been scrawled on this toilet paper.
This note (which is from Burnett’s husband but still addressed to “mom”) reads, “Dear mom, Mentally, I just couldn’t cope with our toilet tissue. So I quit my job today and ran off with a lady chiropractor.”
Then another roll of toilet tissue flies through the window. This one is from the neighbors. It reads, “We don’t like your toilet tissue. So get out of the neighborhood.”
Next, Burnett hears a noise behind a door. She opens it to find her cleaning lady wrapped up in toilet paper. A burglar has left a note saying that he has robbed the place but left the toilet paper.
Burnett then laments taking her toilet tissue for granted. She also says that it didn’t seem that important. But it’s too late, and the damage has been done.
Lastly, a giant roll of toilet paper rolls into the kitchen from The Jolly Green Giant.
We can all relate to Burnett’s mom character in this sketch. We’re living in a world of toilet paper shortages thanks to coronavirus. Just a few weeks ago, toilet paper felt completely unimportant. But now we’re freaking out about it too.
Hopefully, all our toilet paper worries will be gone in the not too distant future. Until that time, we’ll just have to take it day by day.
