Cashier uses her last $20 to pay for customer not knowing the move would change her life

Some people are so good-hearted, so kind, and so caring that they will give up their last remaining dollar to help someone in need. Evidently, some of those people work at Walgreens.

Rita Burns works as a cashier at a Walgreens location in Houston, Texas, and is exactly the kind of person who would give away her last dollar to help someone else. We know this about her because that’s exactly what she did recently.

Rina Liou set out to purchase some light bulbs at Walgreens recently.

Upon getting to the checkout, however, Rina realized she didn’t have her wallet.

“I’m just going to make a dash to Walgreens. And I never go there. I go there and I get my light bulbs. And when I went to pay, my heart just sank,” she said to KHOU 11.

Liou had rushed out the door and forgot her wallet. She did have her husband’s phone, however. Liou knew her husband had Apple pay but she didn’t know how to use it. She stood at checkout trying to figure out how to pay with the app but the line behind her was growing increasingly agitated.

Rita decided to pay for the customer.

Rita decided she would pay for Liou, even though she had very little money left to her name. She had just paid off her bills that day and there was only $20 left in her account.

“I just looked up at God and said, I guess I’m going to do it,” Rita said to KHOU 11.

Rita wasn’t sure that her payment would even go through. She said a prayer before the transaction and it was accepted.

This story actually involves several good people, not just one.

Some people would have just accepted the charitable act and gone about their day but not Liou. The grateful Walgreens customer returned home, collected her wallet, and then promptly drove right back to Walgreens.

Liou paid Rina back for the light bulbs and also gave her some flowers as a special thank you.

She then took a photo with the cashier and posted it to Next-door.

“Rita is the happiest, best employee that Walgreen’s has to offer in normal circumstances,” she wrote.

As it turns out, many people on the Nextdoor app were familiar with Rina and the kindness she regularly shows to others.

Everyone loves Rita Burns.

People began responding to Liou’s post on Nextdoor and sharing their own experiences with Rita.

“Rita is the best!! She is such a lovely person and always remembers me by name and always asks how my mom is doing,” one person wrote.

Fundraiser created for Rita.

Rita’s admirers decided to set up a GoFundMe for the kind woman. A portion of the page’s description reads:

“Ms. Rita at Walgreens is a neighbor in the truest sense of the word. When a customer needed to buy lightbulbs in a rush but had forgotten her wallet, Ms. Rita wanted to pay “but only had $20 in [her] account.” When she realized the bulbs were 50% off, she paid without hesitation using her own debit card.”

$20,500 raised for Rita Burns.

A life-changing amount of money was raised for Rita from GoFundMe. Over $20,000 was donated for the sole purpose of rewarding a good person. This is a heartwarming story that proves good deeds encourage other good deeds.
