Staff throws a birthday party for homeless cat – but nobody shows up

Everyone loves cats, and everyone loves birthday parties, so throwing a birthday party for a cat sounds like it would attract a lot of people, right? Wrong. This kitty’s party was not a success, but she’s not giving up.

But let’s see who the cat is and why the shelter staff decided to throw a party for her.

Monique is a beautiful two-year-old domestic medium-haired kitty, who has been living at the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home for more than three months now. This is not very common for shelter cats, as they tend to be adopted within 23 days from their arrival at the cat home.

Although Monique is super cute, friendly and playful, characteristics that sound ideal for a family cat, she has been tested positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), which means she cannot live with other cats- or any other pets for that matter.

Monique’s condition is not threatening to human health, but it can be threatening to the health of other cats or animals that may come into contact with her. This made the staff explicitly state on their website that this kitty should be the only pet of the adoptive family. Moreover, she will have to play in a cat-proofed garden, which will ensure that no other cats will come into contact with her while she’s outside.

All these limitations have made potential adopters hesitant and unfortunately, nobody has asked to take Monique home. But the shelter staff know that somewhere out there there is her forever home, they just haven’t found it yet. So, when it was time for her to celebrate her birthday on February 14th, Valentine’s Day, they had an original idea.

The staff thought they could organize a birthday party for Monique and thus attract attention, since they normally have more people who look to adopt on Valentine’s Day anyway.

“Staff hoped the decorations would draw everyone to the birthday girl and entice them to ask about what kind of home she was looking for and in an ideal world, offer to take her home,” Nikki Cummins, a communications officer with Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, told The Dodo.

So, they decorated Monique’s spot with nice banners and they even put props around her so that they would catch the visitor’s eye, but it proved to be all in vain. Unfortunately, nobody showed up for the kitty’s party, and the staff couldn’t hide their disappointment.

Monique, on the other hand, didn’t see a problem with that. She was with people she recognizes and knows they love her, she got lots of cheek and belly rubs and had the time of her life! Maybe, deep inside, she knows that it’s not her time to be adopted yet, and she knows how to wait in grace.

So, even though the party idea didn’t work, the staff and Monique don’t lose hope. They are still waiting for the right person to adopt the adorable feline and enjoy all the love she has to offer.
