Foster cat forms a fantastical friendship with a wild deer

Lulu is a cat that came from a frightful situation.

She was rescued from a hoarder’s home and taken in by Orphans of the Storm. Because of her previous ownership, Lulu was extremely nervous wherever she went and needed to spend some time seriously building some trust.

She’d never been truly loved before and it was going to take some time to adjust.

Thankfully, Lulu had a wonderful mom who was willing to help.

“She is very shy and gets scared easily. So we are taking our time with her to properly socialize her and show her that humans can be kind and loving
With time, she has learned to really enjoy being pet and brushed. She even likes her belly to be rubbed! She is incredibly sweet and it has been such fun to see her start to blossom.” – Jennifer Burke via The Dodo

When Lulu first came to the foster home, she found a friend that she was comfortable with named Felix. Things were going good, but Felix soon found his forever home, leaving Lulu alone.

It wasn’t long until Lulu found a friend that didn’t leave her so soon!

After a month of hanging around the foster home, Lulu met her would-be-friend for the first time. A wild deer would occasionally come to the yard and graze around. The family was used to deer, but this one was strangely comfortable in the area for a dear.

Naming her Dolly, the entire family got attached to seeing her visit.

The rest of the family loved seeing the deer wander into the yard, but Lulu seemed to really like seeing Dolly around!

“I noticed Dolly outside and realized she was within view of our foster room, which is in our basement,” Burke said. “So, I ran downstairs to see if Lulu was looking out the window. We have a cat tree placed in front of the window and Lulu was on the top perch watching Dolly. And Dolly was watching Lulu!”

The two of them seemed to be absolutely enamored with each other, especially because they were a different species.

Eventually, the two animals became more and more comfortable with one another.

They started by staring at one another through the window and getting used to the idea of the other. They didn’t seem to have any fear!

“Lulu was very curious about Dolly,” Burke said. “She didn’t seem scared at all. Initially, Dolly would watch Lulu from a distance. But it didn’t take long for Dolly to come right up to the window and chew on the branches next to the house. Lulu was a bit hesitant the first time Dolly came up so close. But, now, it doesn’t faze her one bit. She has even fallen asleep on the perch while Dolly is at the window.”

Now, Dolly stops by multiple times a day!

For a deer to visit the same place multiple times on the same day is a big deal. We can say that it’s for “resources” and stuff, but we all know the real reason – Dolly loves to see her friend!
