Animals feel the sadness of losing loved ones just like humans do. When this mother cat’s kittens didn’t make it, it looked like she would never be happy again.

No one knows why Kathryn and her kittens were abandoned in a vacated rental apartment. But when the new tenants came over and discovered them, they were determined to do what they could.

They rushed the poor animals to the vet. The mother cat was soon given the care that she needed. But the kittens were too dehydrated to survive.

When Kathryn realized that her kittens were beyond help, she became incredibly depressed and couldn’t stop crying.

The chairperson of the veterinary clinic, Izelle Marallich, couldn’t bear to leave the grieving mother cat in a shelter all alone, so she took her to her home.

At first, Marallich was worried that the mother wouldn’t get along with her foster dogs. But she had no reason to worry.

Kathyrn was desperate to find something to mother. So she went right up to the dogs and tried to care for them. The dogs were confused but appreciative of the new guest.

At night, Kathyrn had to sleep next to and hold onto a person. She was just that desperate for the support of another living being.

Every day, the cat would get up and search in vain for her kittens, crying when she realized that they weren’t coming back.

But then something happened to give Kathryn happiness again.

At the veterinary clinic, a litter of puppies arrived. They had all lost their mother and were also heartbroken. Marallich thought that they might benefit from Kathyrn’s urge to be a mother. So she took the three puppies back home with her.

As soon as the puppies were released from their crate and into the home, Kathryn ran right up to them. She fell in love with the dogs, not caring for a second that they were an entirely different species to her.

At first, the puppies were confused. They were scared of Kathryn’s affection and cat-mothering actions.

But Kathryn persisted. She kept on licking their fur and cuddling them. And soon the puppies started to form a strong bond with the cat. After a while, the animals were inseparable.

In no time at all, Kathyrn started nursing the puppies, giving them the nutrients they badly needed.

Marallich noticed that Kathryn’s spirits had raised considerably. She would no longer roam the house crying. Instead, she would be happy and spend all day and night around her new children.

As the puppies grew, they started to become more independent. But Kathryn was unhappy to see them go.

In fact, if they ever wandered off, she would chase them and try to bring them all back into her orbit.

Eventually, the puppies grew old enough to find their own forever homes, and Kathryn had to get used to being without children again. But she had finally experienced being a mother fully.

It appears that Kathryn’s strong mothering instinct will be with her forever. So Marallich is using that to other animals’ benefit. Marallich brought two orphaned kittens into her home shortly after the puppies were adopted. And Kathryn took to these animals too. The kittens are now developing in a healthy way, thanks to Kathryn’s mothering.
