As the Coronavirus pandemic sweeps across the globe, few people are left unaffected. Those of us in places where the virus has begun to spread have found ourselves staying at home to do everything from socializing and exercising, to work or prayer.

Indonesia is one country that has faced stay-at-home orders in an attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19. During this time, Indonesian people have been forced to adapt to the new rules, and so have their pets.

This is the story of one rescued cat that has adopted some atypical behavior since this all began.

Tofu the cat was found on the streets of Indonesia as a kitten, only a few months old.

When the person who rescued her was unable to keep her, Mohammad Fahmi stepped in to give Tofu a home.

Since then, Tofu has grown into a big, sleek white cat with some beautiful blue and brown eyes. The condition is called heterochromia and makes her a uniquely beautiful creature. Today, she is a beloved member of the family and loves to participate in their activities.

“I convinced my mom to let Tofu stay,” Fahmi told The Dodo. “The whole family didn’t really like pets, but now everyone is super into Tofu.”

Tofu is described on her Instagram as a curious cat who loves to watch whatever is going on around her. She totally adores her whole family and wants to be around them all the time, no matter what they are up to.

Usually, Fahmi’s dad would go to the mosque five times a day to pray, leaving Tofu at home.

Now, however, due to the recent pandemic, it is safer for him to stay at home to pray. When Fahmi and his dad roll out their mats, Tofu comes running to join them every time!

“Tofu always loves when our family members are gathering in one spot, so whenever me and my dad go to pray together, she joins and just sits or disturbs us,” Fahmi said.

At first, it was slightly distracting. Tofu would roll around on her family’s prayer rugs while they were praying and get in the way of their prayer practice.

So, in an effort to keep this from happening while allowing Tofu to participate, the family gave her one of their own travel mats.

These types of mats are extra small; just big enough for someone to bow their forehead upon while praying on the go. This size mat happened to be the perfect size for Tofu!

“Lately, she started to understand that the small rug is for her so she doesn’t disturb the others, that took a while,” Fahmi said. “That was a travel rug (adults use it only to cover the part where our face touche the ground), but we rarely use it anyway, might as well use it for Tofu.”

Tofu clearly appreciates the gift and uses it for more than just prayer! This photo of her catching some Z’s is so heartwarming! This sweet cat will always love gathering with her family. In her mind, it’s a time that they can spend together, and that’s what matters most to her.
