Cat paralyzed from waist down drags himself through clinic to comfort sick dogs
Sometimes animals can surprise us, showing compassion belying the stereotypes about them. One cat, for example, has made it his mission to cuddle sick dogs at a veterinary clinic in Perm, Russia.
Named Lucifer, or Luc, the black cat does all this while paralyzed.
A cat in need of help
It all started when Luc was brought into the clinic suffering from injuries of his own. He had been in an accident and had suffered spinal injuries.
Paralyzed, he was brought back to health by the staff at the clinic. It is maybe because of the care shown to him that he now wants to help other animals.
Luc is in tune with the suffering of other animals at the clinic
Though Luc has regained some of the use of his limbs, he canβt walk. Instead, he drags himself around the clinic, trying to help the other animals.
It seemed to the staff that he was in tune with the suffering of the other animals at the clinic, having gone through the same himself.
Luc likes to comfort the other animals
Luc likes to cuddle with the other animals, sometimes for hours, helping to keep them warm. He also donates his blood, with the help of the clinic staff, to the other cats receiving care there.
This altruistic behavior has earned him the admiration of many at the shelter, both humans and animals.
Why does Luc act this way?
While the reason behind Lucβs act of compassion isnβt really known, researchers consider many animals sentient, giving them the ability to feel emotions and sense when others are in trouble.
This sentient allows them to reach out to other animals and humans when they feel that they need help.
Luc knows he’s doing important work at the clinic.
βA sentient animal is one considered to feel pain, suffering, hunger, and pleasure and to have a relationship with the environment that is determined by what it enjoys doing and to avoid things that are unpleasant,β Nick Branson, Animal Welfare and Services Manager at Deakin University, said in a statement on the Universityβs Website.
Making his rounds
According to the staff at the clinic, Luc will drag himself around to the various cages that the animals are in to spend time with them and give them comfort.
He even likes to accompany the nurses on their rounds and keeps the staff company when he is not tending to the animals in the clinic.
Luc serves as an example for animals and humans
Luc is a perfect example of a caring and compassionate animal.
This might not be something you would expect with a cat, at least not to the degree that he seems to care about the other animals around him. Even and especially the dogs.
