Cat suddenly realizes she has ears and her reaction is hysterical
Those of us who have cats or dogs have often asked ourselves the question: does my pet know what it looks like? Would it recognize itself if it were in front of a mirror?
According to science, the general conclusion is no.
Although there is no definitive answer, cats and dogs are unlikely to tell it’s them if you put a mirror right in front of their faces.
Unlike other animals, like some big apes, orcas, and magpies, the most common pets and the ones considered among the very smartest did not pass the mirror-awareness test.
More specifically, scientists sedated animals and put an unscented red spot on their foreheads to see if, looking at a mirror, they would realize it’s themselves they’re looking at and try to touch the spot. Guess what- they didn’t!
So, since a cat, in this case, can’t recognize themselves in the mirror, one could only assume that, consequently, they have no idea what they really look like.
Indeed, it seems they don’t.
Some time ago, a cat named Mimo, found herself in front of a mirror and her reaction to her reflection was captured on video. It goes without saying that the video that was later posted on social media went viral and the cat is now a celebrity!
But, first things first: Mimo is a cute little Scottish Straight cat who lives with her family in Brooklyn.
She’s cute and charming, so it was only natural that she would at some point get her own Instagram account. So, this probably means that she’s used to posing for the camera, but it doesn’t necessarily mean she has ever taken a selfie.
Obviously, Mimo had never taken a selfie before seeing herself in the mirror. How can we be so sure?
Well, the cat apparently had no idea that she has ears!
The video that made Mimo viral (see below), in which she sees herself in the mirror for the first time makes this very clear. At first, she can only see two pointy things and as she moves closer to get a better look, her whole face and body appear in the mirror.
Mimo realizes there is a cat- and it has all the features any other cat she has seen so far has. First and foremost, pointy ears!
Mimo doesn’t seem convinced they are her own cat ears, however.
“These can’t be mine” she seems to be thinking.
So she goes on to touch one ear- “wow, this is actually happening, I’m not dreaming,” she could be telling herself. And then she suddenly turns around, as if she’s telling her owner “Did you get a video of that? How embarrassing!”
The video has gone viral since it was uploaded, with more than 3M views on YouTube. Even Ellen DeGeneres picked up on it and shared it during Cat Week. Now Mimo is definitely a celebrity!
Although it was an embarrassing moment for the adorable kitty, it helped her become famous!
