Cat gets run over by 250 trains after being stuck in underground tracks – and still survives

While most cats may only have nine lives, we’re pretty sure that this feline four-footer in particular actually has no less than 250. Meet the two-year-old cat Blitz, who recently managed to get himself stuck underground at the Tuffnell Park ‘tube’ station in London, UK.

Somehow, Blitz fell into a gap directly between the negative and positive railway line, inches away from moving trains.

He was stuck there for no less than seven hours, and it’s estimated that at least 250 trains passed directly over his head. Rescuers believe that is was actually the very first train that caused the most damage and also threw Blitz into the gap.

Despite being run over by all these trains, Blitz miraculously survived – but just barely.

The kitten survived and was able to be rescued after seven long hours. Blitz’ owner Mark Piggott said that the staff thinks he snuck through an entrance and managed to make his way down an elevator or stairs unnoticed. Mark works as a journalist and is also an author, but he certainly didn’t expect to appear in news articles himself.

“The staff think he got in through an entrance somewhere between Tufnell Park and Archway stations, and then walked up the track,” the owner said to Metro.

“Where that is I don’t know. Maybe it’s meant to be a secret but presumably people can’t get in through the entrance. Perhaps it’s a vent. Maybe he was chased by foxes and ran down there.”

Mark isn’t exactly surprised that his furry friend would run away like this, as he’s seen this behavior before.

“He is quite an adventurous cat who would sometimes follow me down the road towards the tube to work – it is bizarre.”

When Transport for London staff arrived at the scene, they initially thought help would be too late for Blitz.

After all, there was just no way that a cat could survive 250 trains running over it and rescuers were unsure if the cat was still alive when they found him. The line was suspended and electricity was also shut off so that the rescue workers could safely access the tracks. Service was restored after five minutes and the Transport for London staff approached the incident professionally. Mark praises the staff for the successful rescue, but clearly still had to vent his thoughts on social media.

“How the f*** did my cat make his way down onto the track at Tufnell Park tube, get hit by a train have 300 other trains go over the top of him cause the line to be suspended so they could rescue him after seven hours and live? On me birthday?”

Blitz suffered a broken back and his tail also needed to be amputated.

Ever since he was rescued, he’s been on a lot of pain killers and is now under medical care at an animal hospital in Hertfordshire.

“It is actually very upsetting, the thought of him lying on the track like that. He has such a lovely, cosy life at home – then suddenly you are in the tunnel with trains going over the top of him. My wife and kids went there to thank all the staff. They were really, really fantastic. Blitz on the Underground, it’s quite appropriate.”

“To survive almost seven hours in a tunnel lying on the track and have some 250 trains go over it is nothing short of a miracle,” Tufnell Park service manager Dave Keenan added.

Blitz clearly still has a tough road ahead of him – but the important thing is that he’s now safe and doing better.

What an incredible rescue story!
