German shepherd takes a cat’s head in his mouth — but trusting cat has the strange response

Owners of multiple pets know how hard it can be for them to get along sometimes, especially cats and dogs. Fortunately, there are ways to increase the chances that your pets do get along. Take Bella and Butta for instance. Like two peas in a pod, German shepherd Butta and cat Bella are the best of friends, according to their owner Gabriella.

The two have established such a great level of trust with each other that they snuggle in the strangest of ways.

When Gabrielle adopted Bella, she worried that the cat wouldn’t be able to hold her own with her German shepherd, Butta. Those fears were soon put to rest once she saw how fierce Bella was.

“The adoption center said they found her in an abandoned building and she had been in some fights before, which is why her ears are a little wonky,” Gabrielle wrote on Instagram. “She’s truly a fighter.”

Soon, Bella and Butta were playing together, spending most of their time wrestling and teasing each other, at least as much as Gabrielle would allow.

“They’re just joyful, energetic, and playful,” Gabrielle told The Dodo. “They play all the time.”

Bella and Butta often play fight, using all of their energy up in the process. Then it is nap time, and the pair snuggle up together to rest up from their exertion. It was during one of these snuggle sessions that Gabrielle realized just how much the two trusted each other.

A weird sleeping position

“We were on a road trip to Louisiana, and they were playing as usual and just happened to fall asleep,” Gabrielle said. “I was surprised because it was weird that they were like that.”

As Gabrielle looked down, she noticed that Butta had Bella’s head in his mouth. And while the odd sleeping position only lasted for several minutes, it was a sign of their friendship.

You might wonder if cats and dogs can get along. If you go by the stereotypes, the answer is no. And while it is not always possible for the two species to coexist in the same household, if you start socializing them while they are young, you are more apt to meet with success. Even older pets can get along if they are acclimated to each other first.

Tips on how you can get your dog and cat to become friends

The biggest thing when introducing another animal into the home is to do it in such a way that the incoming pet does not intrude into the established pet’s area. This includes keeping the dog or cat out of the areas where the other pet has been sleeping or likes to hang out most often.

Make sure to introduce the new pet to the other pets in your home gradually. This includes keeping the two separated until you feel comfortable that they are familiar enough with each other’s smell. Eventually, with luck, they will naturally grow to accept one another and hopefully become best friends, just like Bella and Butta.
