Mom thought cat was ignoring newborn baby until she watched footage from her baby monitor
Introducing your pet to your baby is a daunting time. Will there be jealousy? Hostility? This is especially the case when it comes to cats, which are known to have a bit of an impatient streak!
You might be worried that your cat will harm your baby, but this fear is often irrelevant. Studies have shown that thereâs little truth to the idea that having babies and kitties at home together is a recipe for disaster.
Obviously, waltzing home with a newborn baby, then proceeding to give it all the attention, wonât work well without a smooth introduction. Itâs normal for your furry feline to feel some stress or appear completely uninterested at first, but in the majority of cases, cats warm to babies without an issue.
If youâre worried about your cat not initially showing affection to your baby, give it time! Thereâs plenty of proof that the relationship between your little âun and your kitty will improve gradually â such as in the case of Sunny the cat and Hazel, the newborn.
Hazelâs parents had lived with Sunny for five years before Hazel was born. They rescued Sunny from an animal shelter when he was 8 years old. He bonded well with the Richardson family â so weâd imagine it was quite an adjustment for him to accept a brand new member into the household!
As expected, Sunny wasnât too impressed with Hazelâs introduction into the family. Out of interest, he took a few sniffs at Hazelâs carrier when she was first brought home, but after this first inspection, he moved onto a task of more importance: eating his dinner.
Sunny continued to pay no attention to Hazel as the months went by. Hazelâs mom, Shannon, began to worry that sheâd never see the day when Sunny and Hazel became true friends. That was, until she was checking the footage on her baby monitor, and came across the most unexpected sight.
On the recorded video, Sunny can be seen sneaking into Hazelâs room and jumping right into her crib. He then curls up next to her and falls asleep. This suddenly made a lot of sense to Hazelâs parents, as that night, Sunny hadnât gone to bed with them, as was his usual routine.
âI was super surprised to see him in the crib,â Shannon said. âThere is not an easy way up without jumping pretty far and he doesnât really like jumping. He stayed there for four hours before my husband realized he didnât sneak back into bed with us!â
From that moment on, Sunny was a changed cat. He let his guard down and decided to take his brotherly love into daylight hours. Nowadays, Sunny follows Hazel everywhere, sleeping at her side and snuggling up with her at every opportunity.
âHe actually jumped in her crib this morning when she was crying and nuzzled against her,â Shannon continued. âShe has not exactly gotten the hang of petting, so she grabbed him and he just stayed there. He is such a good boy.â
Understandably, Shannon and her husband are over the moon about their kittyâs new love for their newborn. Theyâre very proud of Sunny for finally taking on the role of caring older brother. After all, itâs better late than never!
