Cats are abandoned outside pet store with a handwritten letter: “Please understand before you judge.”

There are many reasons people abandon their pets.

It’s common that purchasing the pet was an impulse decision and the owner could not provide for it. Other times, the person cannot be home often enough to take care of Fido. Sometimes, the owners aren’t left with much of a choice in the matter.

Kristi Idnurm learned this when she found a note taped to a kennel of kittens outside the Pet Valu store in Georgetown, Delaware.

Kristi is an employee of the store who also runs a small rescue of her own called Kristi’s Kats Inc. She was surprised to find the note waiting for her when she arrived on Sunday morning to open the store.

The note details the circumstances of the pet owner’s life and why she couldn’t keep all the cats.

This year has completely broke me…”

We had a fire it burnt more then half the house…”

“My sone got in a car wreck and broke his back…”

The note said that there was a crate of cats at the back of the store, and Kristi ran back there as soon as she could to assess their condition.

There were 22 cats and kittens outside of the store.

In an interview with The Dodo, Kristi comments “It was quite a surprise to realize there were cats left outside the store.” As she read the letter, she began to understand WHY and HOW the cats were left outside the store.

After assessing the condition of the cats, she realized that they were all healthy and well cared for, which is uncommon for abandoned animals.

It turns out the person who wrote the letter faced many hardships recently. The writer’s son was in a car accident which required a lot of medical care and expenses, an aunt died of liver cancer and the writer had to pay for the funeral.

To make things even worse, the writer was given an eviction notice and spent those final couple of weeks finding homes for as many cats as possible instead of packing.

With the cats, the writer of the note included litterboxes, toys, and the last $30 of their bank account.

Luckily, the cats were left in very capable hands. Kristi found volunteers from her rescue and quickly found homes for the cats.

My volunteers came in force to wash carriers, fill litter boxes, make lists and answer questions,” she told The Dodo.

Some of the cats were found forever homes with coworkers while others were sent to various rescues such as Town Cats of Ocean City in Maryland and the Coastal Cat Rescue in Delaware.

Kristi hopes that the happy ending for these cats will provide the original rescuer with some peace.
