The Christmas Tree that made a difference
At the center of a small Italian town known as Lucera, the centerpiece of the holiday time is a Christmas tree. But this year, it’s much more than just a visiting spot that inspires holiday-spirit. It is also a great hangout for the gang of cats around the city.
The tree at the center of the city was commissioned by A Cuperte de Natale, a cultural association. The tree actually isn’t a tree, but it’s a bunch of wooden houses all connected that represent the town’s stance on COVID-19. They have all agreed to stay home to slow down the spread of the virus.
Before the tree was built, it was quickly selected by some of the furry citizens of Lucera. These felines saw the houses as much, much more than a symbol of solidarity and the holiday spirit.
“A family of stray cats lives in the square [where the tree was built]. They are taken care of by the locals,” Luigi Conte, president of the association, reported to The Dodo. “They practically built the tree with us.”
The cats are absolutely ecstatic at the way the tree turned out after construction was finished. They are definitely happy customers.
The cats moved in soon after it was finished, and many of the people who helped build the tree were quite excited to see the cats move in.
“The tree was built to send a message about these times we face. But then it became a shelter and amusement park for cats,” Conte mentioned. “They are the protagonists of Christmas this year, making the tree come alive. It was the perfect result.”
The cats made the tree their own home
The cats have their own ways they decorate, with special ornaments and other fun playful pieces decorated all around.
Christmas is bound to be a little different this year due to the pandemic, as the tree’s design was originally intended to suggest. But to have the tree commandeered by cats adds new meaning — that, despite these strange times, there’s still plenty of joy to be found.
Christmas has been different for all of us this year, from having to quarantine, to zoom calls with loved ones, its been a change. But we can all still show Christmas cheer throughout the holidays. The tree was designed to show that together we can make a difference, but now, it clearly shows that even when things don’t go as planned, they can still be positive things.
A message to all of us
“I’m delighted they’re there,” Conte reported. “It’s a message of hope.”
While the cats have no clue what they have done, they’ve inspired the town. People know when they see the felines that fighting COVID is something we all do together. The cats made the best out of a weird situation, and we all can too.
No matter what’s going on in your life, remember that you can spread joy to your friends and loved ones. Random acts of kindness are still alive. Let’s spread cheer in this new year of 2021.
