Hardwork really pays off!

That’s what happened to a working student a few years ago when he showed everyone what true dedication at work really looks like.

In a Facebook post by Pelham resident Jenny Lamey, she shared her unforgettable encounter with a college student from Alabama named Walter Carr who walked 20 miles on his first day at work.

At that time, Walter just got hired at Bellhops Moving, however, something unfortunate happened the night before his first day at work. He was supposed to use his 2003 Nissan Altima, but it broke down. He tried asking his friends and his girlfriend for a ride, but none of them was able to help him.

He was scheduled to help a moving family in Pelham and he didn’t know what else to do.

His clients were really lucky because Walter still showed up.

Bellhops Moving’s new hire was not the type who stops at a dead end but looks for alternatives instead. They often say at work that “first impression lasts”, Walter definitely turned that into reality.

He showed how dedicated he truly was to his new job, so in order to fulfill the appointment that they had with Jenny, he decided to walk his way from his place in Homewood to his client’s home in Pelham.

When he checked how far his destination was via GPS, he discovered that it would take 7 hours for him by foot to get there by 8 A.M., Friday. To be there on time, he immediately woke up after a four-hour nap, Walter got up by midnight to start off his 20-mile journey!

“I wanted to be there before 8,” he said. “I wanted to beat the crew members there to let the company know how dedicated I am.”

He’s determined to arrive at the location on time.

Along his way, he met a couple of cops who were deeply amazed after learning that Walter was only walking his way to a client that was miles away from him. To save him some energy, they gave the young man a ride to where he was headed to.

As planned, Walter got there on time! Even Jenny was in disbelief at what the hard-working student did just to help them with their scheduled move.

In a Facebook post, she wrote, “Around 6:30 a.m. the doorbell rang. It was a police officer. He proceeded to tell us that he had picked up ‘this nice kid’ in Pelham early this morning. ‘The nice kid,’ Walter, said he was supposed to help us with our move today.”

The touched client showed her appreciation by setting up a GoFundMe for Walter to get his car fixed. Surprisingly, he didn’t need to use the raised amount for car repair because something much bigger was waiting for him.

Rewarding a dedicated employee.

Bellhops CEO Luke Marklin took notice of Jenny’s viral Facebook post, so he decided to show his appreciation to Walter by meeting him personally. He didn’t just praise the young man for his efforts but also put his predicament to an end.

He gave Walter his personal 2014 Ford Escape! No more tracking in the middle of the early morning for his employee.

“Decisions in your life that are sometimes big and that you make pretty quickly because they’re the right thing to do — and this was one of them,” Luke told WMBA.

Walter was in total shock with the surprise and said, “I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t think that 20-mile walk would mean anything to anybody.” he said. “I’m really thankful for it, the car, for everything.”
