Have you ever been horrified to discover you’ve been doing something wrong your whole life? Take the Tic-Tac container, that actually has a little slot on the underside of its lid for dispensing its contents one at a time.

And then there’s the cooking pot, which has a hole in its handle for hanging it up – but also for sticking your wooden spoon through to keep it off your kitchen counter.

There’s even a feature at either end of a tin foil box that can help you “lock” the roll in place and prevent if from coming out while you’re trying to pull off a sheet.

But none of these compare to our latest revelation – that cereal boxes actually have a special way of closing that we’ve never even clocked onto before.

It all took a video by a Facebook user called Becky Holden McGhee for the truth to come out. Becky promised she had the “easiest hack in the world” – and she delivered!

Becky demonstrated how it’s normally impossible to keep a cereal box closed, because the flaps reopen again. This is an issue if you’re the sort of family to have four or five cereals on the go at one time, because by the time you get round to the bottom of every bag, chances are, the cereal’s going to be stale.

Luckily, with Becky’s hack, you can enjoy fresher cereal for longer. In the video, she showed exactly how to fold the box to properly close it.

Here’s what you need to do.

1. Fold the outside flaps on the left and right-hand side into the box.

2. Fold the front flap inside the box and press it down to keep it in place.

3. Press the left side of the box together to form a fold (check out the image to make sense of this step!).

4. Do the same on the right side of the box, then slide the top flap into the box.

Becky says it’s taken her 40 years to master the hack, which really is quite simple. Speaking to Bored Panda about her discovery, the mom-of-two from Blackpool admitted that she was shocked at how her video had taken off. She added:

β€œIt was accidental, I never in a million years thought it would be viewed 3 million times!”

While some people commented beneath Becky’s video to say they’d been doing the hack for years, the majority were as surprised as her that they had been missing out on something so simple, yet so effective.

One person commented to say:

“Get out! I need to try this.”

While another provided a more honest comment:

“My family members can’t even fold towels properly so I doubt any of them will be using this method any time soon.”

The sad truth for many of us.

We’re not sure why cereal box manufacturers never thought to share this tip with us in the first place, assuming that this was how they intended us to close their boxes with such a design. But luckily, it only takes us humans a few decades to figure these things out, so now we can all sleep in peace in the reassurance that we know how to close a cereal box.

You’d be surprised at just how many popular cereal brands have boxes that you can fold as demonstrated in Becky’s video. Go and check your cupboards – you’ll probably find that nearly all of your boxes are easily foldable.
