There are some animals in our world that are more than happy to live closely amongst us humans. Others are only ever supposed to be in the wild, doing their own thing. They’ve chosen to keep their distance from us, and we should respect that.

The wild horses that can be found roaming the Delta Danube are one of the best examples of this idea. The horses prefer to trot through Europe alone, but some people have other ideas.

In Letea, Romania, wild horses are targeted for all the wrong reasons. Some people capture these horses for meat production, while others attempt to keep them as pets.

Ovidiu Rosu, veterinarian for the Four Paws team, regularly patrols the Letea area to keep an eye out for this unkind activity. On one of his trips to the countryside, he discovered a wild horse that had its front two legs cruelly chained, preventing it from being able to run or even properly walk.

Unfortunately, this kind of restraint is common in Romania – but that’s not to say that people like Rosu will put up with it. He had a tranquilizer gun to hand, and shot the horse so as not to scare her while he came up close to inspect her restraints. A thrashing horse would put Rosu at risk, and could also hurt the horse in question.

The horse fell down, but she was still awake; just in a sedated state. Rosu covered her eyes to keep her calm while he worked. The horse had a friend, who stood by, watching Rosu remove the chains.

The chains had been placed around both of the front hooves of the horse, preventing her from being able to move quickly and causing her to hop. The heavy chains would have also cut into her ankles and caused her a lot of pain.

With a pair of very strong pliers, Rosu started to cut away at the chains that bound the horse’s hooves. Even with the horse being in a sedated state, it looks like hard work.

Once the chains were removed, Rosu waited for the horse to come round. He removed the cloth from her eyes, and when she was ready, helped the horse to her feet.

What’s for sure, Rosu clearly has a lot of love and respect for these animals. He didn’t only rescue the horse; he waited around to make sure she was well enough to stand after her sedation.

Finally, Rosu tagged the horse, so he could track it and make sure it didn’t find itself in any further trouble in the future.

She had an unfortunate fate set out for her, but the horse now had a new lease of life – and it was all thanks for Rosu. It’s very unlikely that Rosu’s job is high-paying, or that he’s even paid for it at all. He has simply seen wrong in the world and set out to give justice to these beautiful animals.

Luckily, this horse had a group of good friends who looked out for her even while she was in chains. Thanks to Rosu’s rescue, she will be able to roam freely with her herd once more.
