Spiral cut a potato to make a cheesy 'tornado potato' – the salty snack of dreams
Eating well is something we should aim to do 80 percent of the time, but when it comes to the weekend, you deserve to enjoy your favorite naughty foods. For some people, that might mean satisfying their sweet tooth with a good helping of chocolate. For others, it’s all about those salty snacks.
If you consider yourself to be more of a savory person, you’re going to fall in love with this “tornado potato” recipe. They’re crispy, salty (but not too salty), and incredibly flavorful. Essentially, you need to make them right now.
The best thing about tornado potatoes is that you need virtually no ingredients. In fact, you probably have them all in your cupboards already. If you’re trying to limit how often you’re heading to the supermarket at the moment, you may not even leave your home at all to get your homemade snack fix.
This particular recipe is designed for two people, though one particularly hungry person could easily polish off the finished result! Feel free to halve, double or even triple the recipe if you wish to serve more or less people.
Here’s what you’ll need:
Potatoes:
- 2 medium white potatoes
- 4 tablespoons of melted butter
- 1 cup of grated parmesan cheese
- 2 skewers
Seasonings:
- 1 tablespoon of paprika
- ½ teaspoon of black pepper
- 1 tablespoon of garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon of salt (or to taste)
- Chopped parsley for garnish, optional
Now for the recipe!
1. Preheat your oven at 325° or 160° degrees. While you’re waiting for it to warm up, stick a barbecue-style skewer through the middle of each potato. The skewer should be poking out of either end of the potato.
2. Now for the tricky part! Don’t worry, it gets easier after this. Take a sharp, thin knife and hold it at an angle over potato number 1. Turn the skewered potato and cut in the opposite direction. This sounds confusing, we know, but the video below this recipe post makes it look easy.
3. Do the same cutting on your potato number 2. Make sure you’ve done it right, so you get the “spiral effect” and the right sort of bake in the oven.
4. Spread each potato out on its skewer. You want as much potato to be on show as possible so you can season every crevice. Once they’re fanned out to your liking, you can brush them both with melted butter.
5. Now, combine your remaining seasonings: the parmesan cheese, the pepper, salt, paprika and garlic powder, in a large bowl.
Once they’re properly mixed, dip and roll your potatoes through the seasoning. You may want to use a spoon to reach those hard-to-access areas.
6. Place the potatoes on a baking dish, making sure to hook the skewers over each end of the dish to prevent the potatoes from touching the base of the dish. This will help the potatoes to cook all the way around.
7. Leave your potatoes in the oven for 25 to 30 minutes, until they turn a golden brown color. Then remove from the oven and sprinkle with a bit more cheese and parsley.
And you’re done – it’s as easy as that! Now you get to enjoy your salty creations. Just make sure to let them cool for a couple of minutes, first.
