The New York City Subway has a pretty bad reputation. But in actuality, there are more heartwarming moments than bad moments.

New Yorkers will rarely ever praise their city’s subway system, for a good reason.

More often than not, it’s delayed and packed. But there’s also something magical about it. People from all over the city use it to get from A to B, and that doesn’t just mean the A and B trains.

People connect with each other on the subway, in a way that’s not possible elsewhere, as this video proves.

It begins with a man playing a game on his phone. Next to him, a young child watches him play.

After a while, the man notices that the boy is obsessed with the game. So he does something unexpected.

He hands the boy his phone and lets him play the game for the rest of the journey.

It seems like a small moment. But the little kid really appreciated being able to play the game.

Eventually, it was time for the child to get off the train with his mom. The kid thanked the man and went about his day.

But neither the boy nor the man knew that someone across from them was filming most of this.

The footage then appeared on YouTube, where it soon resonated with a large audience. To date, it has gained over 124,000 views. It also has more than 200 likes and 60 comments. People have been saying things like this:

Sadly, right now, the subway and the rest of New York City looks nothing like this video. Most people know that NYC is the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak.

However, when normal life starts to take shape again, moments like this will come back with a vengeance. That’s one of the greatest things about the city. It’s filled with people of all different sizes, shapes, ages, backgrounds and nationalities getting along with one another.

It’s true that bad things happen on the subway. Sometimes, there are gross people. But more often than not, there are people like this man and the little boy, who share experiences.

Of course, social distancing is not just a New York City thing. Almost all of America is having to cope with social distancing. But we are coping, and because of our efforts, coronavirus is dying.

In a few months, hopefully, things will be back to normal. But it will be a new normal. We’ll all realize how important it is to get along, to reach out to others and to enjoy one another’s company.

Satre said “Hell is other people,” but how can you think that if you watch a video like this and remember what it was like to say hi to a new person? Sure, Hell can be other people. But more often than not, socializing with other people is what makes us an incredible society. This year, we all need to learn to love one another, no matter our petty differences. We’ve done that by social distancing. Soon, we’ll be able to do that by being physically together again.
