Cimorelli sisters release version of Christmas hit “Mary, Did You Know,” enchanting millions

Cimorelli is an a capella girl group that got their start on YouTube and quickly rose to fame not only because of their vocal stylings but because they are all sisters.

Once made up of 5 women, in 2010 a 6th sister (out of a total of 11 Cimorelli children) joined the group. Cimorelli has now released 6 studio albums since they started performing in 2007.

The family (which includes 5 brothers as well) is originally from Northern California. Their mother is a classical pianist who instilled a love of music in her children and taught them to sing and play piano from a young age.

While they moved to LA to record their first album and pursue music, the women and their family quickly realized they’d be better off in Nashville and working to privately release their own work.

Christina Lynne Cimorelli, Katherine Ann Cimorelli, Lisa Michelle Cimorelli, Amy Elizabeth Cimorelli, Lauren Christine Cimorelli, and Danielle Nicole ‘Dani’ Cimorelli are currently touring and one of their many Christmas songs is making the rounds on social media, earning over 1.3 million views since it was released on November 30, 2019.

The song recorded by the sisters – who are devout Catholics – is “Mary, Did You Know,” originally released by Christian singer Michael English in 1991 but covered hundreds of times since then.

And while many find the song beautiful, its lyrics have also been criticized as wildly sexist because it implies that the Virgin Mary knew nothing about what her son would become when the Bible clearly states that she did. In fact, Mary DID know the answer to all of the questions posed in the song!

Of course, it’s not the only Christmas song to come under fire once people started listening to the lyrics! (“Baby It’s Cold Outside,” for example.)

Nevertheless, it has still become a Christmas classic and covers of it frequently reach the Top 10 on the Billboard charts around Christmastime.

The Cimorelli cover – putting the lyrics aside – is truly beautiful solely because the women’s voices are so angelic. Acapella covers are often impressive for the vocal range required to simulate instruments.

Taking place deep in a forest, the video is quite simple. The women are all lined up and take turns sharing the lead vocals.

And it appears commenters love debating which sister has the best voice.

“Lauren and Lisa were stunning as always but y’all are so amazed by them that you forget how incredible the others do every time heck Dani and Amy SLAYED Dani’s voice is so soft and smooth I love when she sings higher and Amy …. wow she nails every note. [E]very note sounds perfect I love her emotion and her voice is soooo stronggg,” said one commenter.

But everyone has their favorite:

“I feel like Christmas songs are really Katherine time to shine. She got all the feels in her voice,” said another YouTube viewer.

Many fans commented on the depth of their faith and how it shines through in their performances of religiously-inspired numbers:

“I love how they incorporate their faith with their music and it just works. Like they don’t push their faith on their viewers but they truly worship God. Just love them so much.”

The women, who range in age now from 19 to 29, show no signs of slowing down their music career, so stay tuned to their YouTube space for more new releases.
