Puppy with cleft palate was rescued and is thriving – and now has a brother just like him

NorCal Bully Breed Rescue (NBBR) is one of those organizations that you might not think about helping until you see just how necessary their work is. And if you’re an animal lover, it’ll warm your heart to see the effort they put into rescuing medically compromised dogs.

NBBR has saved over 500 dogs since it was founded in 2013 and now has a network of over 70 fosters who provide love, safety, and medical care to dogs that are often discriminated against twice – due to both disability and breed.

Bugatti (AKA “Boo”) is one of the dogs. He was rescued by NBBR executive director Leslie Bird.

Boo is a French Bulldog who was born with a cleft palate (an abnormal opening in the roof of the mouth that can make it difficult to breathe and eat).

The squeaky little pup was taken in by Bird as soon as she found out about him.

While Boo is grateful, he also likes to register his complaints about not getting constant attention. And, as his foster mom says, he sounds like a tiny pterodactyl when he squeak-barks!

But poor Boo had to come a long way before he was the Chief Complaint Officer of the house.

He suffered from aspiration pneumonia and needed nearly a week’s worth of medical treatment just to survive.

But survive he did!

Now Boo is thriving.

Once he could eat on his own and began to gain weight, his fiery personality came out!

“He’s kind of a tyrant,” Bird told The Dodo.

Boo enjoys playing with his fellow foster pets – even when they’re not especially keen on playing with him.

He also loves tearing things apart and playing hide-and-seek. He was so good at hiding that Bird had to put a little bell around his neck.

But he was so small she had to put it on a cat collar for him!

Bird’s big heart leads her to take in lots of unwanted animals, and pretty soon Boo was no longer the baby of the house. He met his match when his brother Po came along.

Po is also a cleft palate puppy – and the two took a while to set aside their differences when they became unwilling roommates.

“I never promised you a single room,” Bird joked in a video of the pup staring at her, betrayed.

The dinosaur-sounding duo now both have cat collars with bells – and while they’re noisy, they sure are adorable!

The two love playing together – and watching the miniature pups that no one thought would survive is a beautiful thing.

As of mid-March, Boo and Po still lived with Bird although it’s unclear if she has adopted them permanently.

These days, you can find them practicing safe social distancing – sometimes from each other.
