Clever Beagle gets busted swiping food on camera when humans are gone
Dogs rely on their humans for a lot of things. This is one good reason why a lot of dog owners feel uncomfortable about leaving their pets alone at home. They worry that their pets might start throwing tantrums and destroying things when they aren’t around. Some dog owners also just aren’t comfortable with the idea of their dogs being hungry all day.
Rodd Scheinerman, however, had a different reason for spying on his dog Lucy.
In his house, food keeps on disappearing and, of course, the prime suspect was his clever Beagle. However, since he didn’t have enough proof, he couldn’t really get mad or reprimand his pet.
So, he decided to investigate.
Rodd set up a spy camera at home. Wanting to get solid evidence, he also left a few pieces of chicken nuggets in his toaster. After setting up everything, he stepped out of the house. What happened after 7 minutes surprised him.
The video revealed a lot. The footage showed the sneaky Beagle moving restlessly around the kitchen. She even seemed to be smelling the food in the oven. After a few seconds, Lucy leaped into a chair.
The smart Beagle actually used it as a ladder to get on the table.
There, she continued her search and scanned the counter for any signs of food. After not finding anything there, she left the table. Then, she went on to execute plan B.
Lucy walked around the dining table and carefully pushed a chair with her paw. She pushed it close enough to the kitchen counter so she could use it to get to the oven.
The Beagle reached her target.
After getting to the oven, she showed no hesitation in getting to her target. She opened the oven with her paw and started nibbling at the chicken nuggets. When a piece fell to the floor, she immediately jumped after it.
Then the hungry little Beagle came back for another serving. As if one piece wasn’t enough, Lucy retraced her steps to get more chicken nuggets. She probably ended up eating all of them!
Dogs stealing food from kitchen counters is common.
Apart from the fact that dogs love to eat, they are also stimulated by the scents coming from food items you prepare and cook in your kitchen. By instinct, they will jump on the counter because they are naturally curious creatures. And when they find something there, they will eat it.
Once they succeed at eating something off your kitchen counter, they’ll learn that stealing food is a rewarding experience. This makes them likely to repeat the behavior over and over again.
As a solution, you might want to set up a baby gate in your doorway to prevent your dog from getting near your counters. You can also try and boundary-train your pet from the kitchen. This will teach him to not cross the boundary lines you’ve set.
You should avoid leaving food unattended, too.
As much as possible, be consistent in training your dog. However you go about training them, you should NEVER hit your dog just because you can’t stop it from stealing your food.
