Clever cat leaves owner stunned after teaching himself how to use the toilet
Do you remember Mr. Jinx, the cat that could use the toilet and flush, from “Meet the Fockers”?
Well, you should know that he is not the only cat out there that can do it, and it is actually quite a thing for cats to teach themselves how to use the toilet.
Izzie Willis has an adorable cat, Ramen, who is pretty smart.
But, she had no idea just how smart he is until recently when he saw him do something she never taught him: use the toilet.
Like, the actual toilet humans use, not the litter box cats are normally supposed to use.
“I was brushing my teeth [in the bathroom] and he came up to me, looked me square in the eyes and started pissing in the toilet,” Willis told The Dodo. “My reaction was, ‘Wow.’”
Willis was stunned at the sight of Ramen “pissing in the toilet”, but she knew nobody would believe her if she told them.
So, she decided to capture the moment on video and posted it on Twitter, so that everyone would know what a smart cat she owns!
According to the woman, Ramen probably picked up the skill by watching the humans in the house do it, although he still hasn’t mastered the flushing thing.
After her post on Twitter, there were other users that replied to her with videos or photos of their own cats using the toilet, some of them claiming their cats, too, taught themselves how to do it.
For example, Benji still surprises his owner with his toilet skills, but she doesn’t seem to care since she saves a lot on litter.
Apart from the fun part of this, we should also consider the pros and cons of having a cat “go” in the toilet instead of the litter box.
According to experts, it is indeed feasible for someone to toilet train their cat, yet it isn’t the wisest thing to do, as it can cause problems to both the cat and its owner in the long run.
More specifically, cats could carry a parasite called Toxoplasma gondii, which causes the disease Toxoplasmosis.
Although not all cats carry it, it could happen and in case the cat misses and some poop ends up on the toilet seat, humans could also be infected.
Also, cat owners should always make sure the bathroom is accessible to the cat and the lid is always up so that the cat can use the toilet whenever it needs, otherwise it will use the first thing that comes to mind- be it your shoes, a carpet, your laundry, etc.
Finally, toilet use often requires some jumping on the part of the cat, and this could be something you want to avoid. Like after a surgery, or as the cat gets older and potentially suffers from arthritis, as 90% of elderly cats do.
Considering all the information, we might conclude that a cat using the toilet may not be a great idea. However, we can’t deny that Ramen is really cute as he “does his thing” almost like a human!
