Coach postpones football practice and asks team to shovel snow-covered driveways for the elderly

Snowy days may mean more warm cuddles and drinking mugs of hot chocolate while watching your favorite soap opera, but they can also mean other things that hassle you.

A snowy day can be a nice break, but it can also mean a lot of extra labor to keep your property in shape.

And by this added labor, I meant having to spend some time shoveling the ie-covered pathways or driveways so your cars can pass through. This can be manageable for most families, but how about those homes where elderly people live?

Cleaning up and moving all that snow is already a lot of work for a person of average age, so can you imagine the hardship it would cause a senior citizen to get this job done? With that much work that needs to be done, it is expected that the elderly homeowners in the neighborhood would usually just let the snow cover the pathway and wait for a long time for the ice to melt and for them to be able to go outside.

On one particularly snowy day, the football team of Bethel High School in Pennsylvania was advised that their weightlifting exercises will be canceled.

Brian DeLallo, the team’s head football coach, called off the training schedule for that day due to the bad weather. It was inevitable that practice can sometimes be canceled because of these reasons, but this coach found a way to keep his team in shape while helping out other people in the community.

He told the young football players to grab their shovels and head to the homes of elderly people in the neighborhood that needed their snow-covered pathways to be cleared of snow. The students saw the chance to train while helping out and followed their coach’s instructions right away.

Coach Brian shared their activity via a tweet.

He wrote online:

“Due to expected severe weather, Monday’s weightlifting workout has been canceled. Find an elderly or disabled neighbor and shovel their driveway. Don’t accept any money – that’s our Monday workout.”

People online were positively impacted by what the coach and his students did. The story soon went viral and Coach Brian was eventually invited for an interview with Fox News where he shared the details of the inspiring story.

As it turned out, the activity was part of a tradition that has been in place for 20 years.

The football coach shared that the school’s former head coach, Jeff Metheny, started this tradition two decades ago.

“Jeff had always had our kids do this. Any time we had a snow day and school was canceled, he had the kids go out and shovel driveways for people in the community who were elderly or who were disabled or otherwise could not shovel their own driveways,” Brian shared.

The coach credit his predecessor for the incredible idea of helping others as part of the student’s training and workout. It only took one call for each of the team players to answer and go to the places in need of shoveling.

Their simple but meaningful contribution and way of helping others in the community is proof that small acts of kindness can sometimes make the biggest waves of positive impact.
