Antique collector goes the extra mile to track down homeless man who sold him a rare collectible
Trash isn’t always as worthless as we think it is. What you feel like tossing out now could earn you thousands later.
Such is the case in an antique shop in Edmonton, Alberta called Curiosity Incorporated. One of their regular walk-in clients, a homeless man named Adam Gillian, strolled in one day with an old animation cel he found in a dumpster. The father of three thought the item would earn him a small amount that would help him buy the day’s necessities.
He walked out with over $20 for an old framed picture of Bambi, a Disney character.
To Adam, that was good enough.
After all, that was his intention – to earn just enough to get him through the day. But what seemed like a fair trade paved the way for something greater.
The antique shop owner, Alexander Archbold, shared in a YouTube video that he overlooked the unique details of the piece so he decided to take a closer look.
After thorough research, the owner concluded that the item was indeed worth way more than $20.
Consequently, he was able to sell it for much more.
Instead of carrying on with his business, Archbold did what any decent human being would do – divide the total amount of what he earned from the item so he could split it with Adam.
But since Adam was homeless, Archbold had to wander the streets to find him.
It was difficult especially since the holiday season was approaching and it was much colder outside.
After two weeks of looking, Adam finally walked right back into the antique shop and Archbold was able to convince him to meet again the next day.
Adam was under the impression that the shop owner was just going to interview him. They began talking about general topics, with Alexander even mentioning how he searched for weeks to find Adam again. Confused about why Alexander was trying to locate him, Adam was reminded about the item he had recently sold.
Then, Alexander handed Adam an envelope.
Inside was the amount the shop owner had equally divided.
As if that wasn’t incredible enough, Alexander asked if Adam was okay with the shop owner setting up a GoFundMe account for him. He agreed. In the video’s comments section, Alexander shared,
“We didn’t mention it in this video but Adam did get the entire value of the piece. We used the other half for food, clothes and a ticket home. Additionally we were able to raise $18k through gofundme. There is an update linked to the end of this video :) Thanks for watching! And all the best to you Adam and your new future!”
Alexander deeply understood how things were like for Adam since he and his family were once in the same situation.
Before entering the world of buy and sell, he had a tough life too.
The generous and empathetic shop owner also described how he would never dream of milking profit from anyone, especially the less fortunate. No wonder Alexander went the extra mile to look for Adam, extend financial assistance, and help him get back up on his feet.
Now, Adam is back to work, happier and more confident, thanks to Alexander and all those who pitched in.
