Fast-footed shag dancers will make you smile as they take first place in annual competition
From coast to coast, Americans are still participating in vintage dance styles like the Jitterbug and the Shag.
In 2014, a group of dancers that goes by the name “LA Shag” participated in the Camp Hollywood event, one of the largest and longest-running swing dance camps in the world.
The fun-filled festivities generally take place over Labor Day weekend and involve a series of classes as well as competitions for people to take part in.
LA Shag ran away with first place in the Team competition that year but there were also singles and doubles competitions in the Balboa, Lindy Hop, Shag, and other swing dance match-ups. Everyone from amateurs to professionals are invited to take part each year.
The team’s Collegiate Shag routine was performed to the California Feetwarmers’ cover of the song “San (I Want My Dime Back).” But while the first few moments show the group nodding off to dreamland on the dance floor, they kept the audience wide awake once they started moving.
One by one, the four couples pick up the rhythm and get to work.
Collegiate Shag is part of the swing dance family. While most people can only make guesses about the exact origins of different Shags – collegiate, West Coast, and East Coast – it’s thought that Collegiate Shag is a bit “bouncier” and was simply a variation of the dance that was found on college campuses.
The number of beats is usually one good way to determine the difference between some dances and the Collegiate Shag is a 6-beat dance whereas other Shags are 8-counts.
But you needn’t be concerned about the technical details if you simply want to enjoy the show. And it’s hard not to once these 4 couples all start moving their feet in near-perfect uniso!
“Wow….10 seconds into this dance and I would be on the floor! Bravo to all the dancers!” one commenter said of their fancy footwork.
It is quite a lot of cardio!
Of course, many viewers expressed a certain reverence for the amount of work that goes into this kind of performance, despite the fact that the dancers almost make it look easy.
And we have no doubt people watched it over and over again, which is why the video has over 2.5 MILLION views on YouTube.
Normally, we’re used to seeing just two people out on the floor during a Shag competition. A large team of four couples requires the dancers (and viewers!) to divide their attention. But when done in perfect unison – like LA Shag’s display – the result is something truly impressive.
While there are twists and spins, it’s mostly about the foot movement here. You won’t see any acrobatics during these types of routines.
What we’re most impressed by is the high-energy smiles that the dancers manage to keep up. They look like they’re truly having fun performing instead of simply trying to execute the moves.
And their enthusiasm makes all the difference – not only does it make us want to press the replay button, but we feel encouraged to get up and move our feet a bit too!
Let’s just say it’s no surprise that the room erupted into applause from fellow dancers when the routine was over.
