Woman has hilarious sewing mishap while she attempts DIY face mask tutorial

We all know that humor can raise our spirits during hard times.

Even when you don’t think it’s appropriate to laugh, sometimes you just have to. In fact, laughing – even when nothing is funny – can decrease your cortisol levels, which are related to stress.

This is why laughter yoga is a thing – check it out!

Of course, genuine laughter in the time of coronavirus is hard to come by. We’re stuck indoors, we’re worried about our physical, mental, and financial health, and we don’t know when it will all end.

The experts have now recommended that if we do go outdoors, wearing a face covering is the best way to protect ourselves and others.

We’ve seen countless articles on DIY masks and many of us just haven’t accepted the reality of having to make them yet. That’s normal.

And that’s also why watching someone epically fail at making one can be funny.

Stephanie Weir is a comedian whose face may look familiar from shows like MADtv or Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. While she’s often behind the scenes writing and producing, she and her husband Bob Dassie have a YouTube channel called WeirDass (say that out loud a few times if you don’t know why that in itself is funny).

They explain:

“We’re married all the time and improvise together some of that time. And sometimes we make these videos.”

Well, Weir made one for all of us maskless folks. And since she posted in on April 14th, it’s been viewed well over 7 MILLION times.

It’s clear we all need a laugh about this whole, horrible situation!

Weir’s video is a faux-show called “Oh, Kay,” in which her fictional character Kay Pruitt is going to show all us amateurs how to make a custom mask. And like so many DIYers, she insists “if I can make a facemask, so can you.”

She’s got a measuring board, pins, scissors, a sewing machine, and some fabric for this “easy” little project.

We’re going to begin by cutting two simple 9″x6″ squares out of our chosen fabric – easy, right? Anyone can cut a square!

Well, except Kay. She manages to nick herself on the first try. And the second.

Her easy, breezy manner takes a 2-second hiatus as she stares into the camera after nicking herself again. See, isn’t this fun and simple?!

Now we’re on to step two as Kay takes her cutting off-screen. It’s perfect since all the work seems to be magically done in between scenes in so many DIY videos.

The only problem is that Kay seems to have gotten a few more injuries from her easy project in the meantime. Oops!

But she’s forging ahead with cutting the elastic. She’s even got a roller tool for this.

The project requires 7-inch pieces of elastic (which we can apparently add to our materials list).

Of course, that can be hard to measure out if you’re using a measuring pad with those tiny numbers and forgot your glasses.

She’s going to need a closer look.

Now it’s sewing time, but since she’s not seeing things clearly, it looks like we’re going to have some elastic problems.

Now, vegetarians and vegans might have a hard time with the next step because you need to be able to line up your elastic between two squares of fabric “like a BLT.” But don’t worry – there’s advice for you too.

Alas, it turns out that creating seams is not Kay’s strong suit.

Pro tip: do not sew yourself to your project.

We won’t spoil the ending of this helpful tutorial for making your own ever-so-easy washable, reusable face mask, but let’s just say that when Kay comes back for the final segment she really has all of her tools ready this time – including the two most important: eyeglasses and wine.
