Woman’s stuck in construction on the way to the vet – worker saves dying dog with mouth-to-mouth

We’ve all heard stories of people being brought back from the dead but rarely do we find stories about dogs.

Teresa Perkins was speeding down the highway at a speed some would consider dangerous but it’s because she had something she didn’t want to lose with her.

Thirty minutes prior to the highway, Perkins had gotten a call from her daughter that no dog mom wants. Jett, the 3-year-old German shepherd, had been playing fetch when a ball became lodged in his throat.

Poor Jett was struggling to breathe.

Perkins rushed home to try to save the pup, but the ball was too slobbery to grab. It just kept slipping from her hand.

Thus began the race of a lifetime to get to the vet to save Jett.

As if her day wasn’t bad enough, Perkins ended up in construction traffic. Jett continued to struggle to breathe and Perkins feared they only had minutes left together.

Perkins panicked and started blowing on her horn to try to get attention. That’s when luck would change.

Three of the construction workers came over to her car to see what was wrong.

That’s when Perkins word vomited everywhere.

“By then my dog was pretty much dead,” Perkins told USA Today. “he was laying in the car, to moving. I had heard him breathe, like gasping but then he quit. I was frantically crying and praying.”

It’s good thing Perkins was fast thinking because Cavaja Holt was one of the workers ready to act and act fast. Holt pulled the ball from the dog but Jett still wasn’t breathing.

That’s when another construction worker told Holt, “breathe in his mouth, breathe in his mouth.”

Perkins started doing chest compressions on Jett while Holt performed CPR. The two worked together tirelessly until Holt yelled, “He’s awake.”

Perkins recounts that had she driven just 10 more minutes, they would be mourning Jett instead of celebrating.

Perkins continued her trip to the vet to get the all clear. The staffers at Animal Health Center were anticipating their arrival and eight staff members ran out to help.

One of the staffers when told the story said, “wow, the world is still good.”

We could not agree more!

The vet’s office gave Jett the all clear and he was able to go home that day.

In the chaos of trying to save Jett, Perkins never got the name of her dog’s rescuer. Her daughter posted the story on Facebook hoping to find the dog hero.

In no coincidence, Holt had also posted on Facebook trying to find the owner so he could check in on Jett.

Someone connected the two quickly and the next day Perkins took Jett to the site to see Holt. She even got a photo of them together.

Jett is doing amazing and Perkins says there will be no more balls for Jett.

A word of caution for all our dog lovers. Be sure to watch your pet closely whenever you give them a toy to avoid a future situation like this one.
