Woman rushes to help dying dog, then construction workers save its life
If you have a dog, then you know how much a pet owner can worry about the welfare of their pet when they are away. So, what happens when that fear takes a physical form?
In one case, a dog mom received a call that her pet was choking. Fortunately, she came across a kind stranger during her attempts to rush him to the vet, a chance meeting that possibly saved her dog’s life.
Choking on a ball
The dog, a German shepherd named Jett, was playing catch with his family. As he chased his favorite ball, he somehow swallowed it and started to choke. Bliss Nuckols, who was playing with Jett at the time, tried to help him dislodge the object, but it was no use. It was stuck and he was struggling to breathe.
Rushing Jett to the vet
Nuckols next called his owner, her mother, Teresa Perkins. As Perkins rushed home to help Jett, she called the vet. The vet told her to bring the dog in as soon as she could. Arriving home, she placed Jett in her car and rushed to get him help. All the while, Jett continued to struggle to breathe.
Caught in traffic
Driving fast, probably faster than was safe, she was caught in traffic. Ahead lay a construction zone. Meanwhile, Jett’s breathing began to get worse and Perkins began to fear for his life. When he suddenly stopped breathing, she feared the worst. Getting out of the car, she looked around for somebody to help her.
Asking two strangers for help
Nearby she saw two men working at the construction site, Jay Johnson and Cavaja Holt. Begging for their help, the two men did not know what she wanted due to her panic and tears. She then led them to her dying dog, and the two immediately understood what was going on.
Without hesitating, Holt reached into Jett’s mouth. Grabbing ahold of the lodged ball, he pulled it out. Despite this, Jett was still not breathing. Johnson suggested they use CPR, and the two men began to work on the dog. Holt blew in the dog’s mouth and began doing chest compressions.

Initially, there was no response, and it seemed that it was too late. But then, Jett lifted his head. He was alive. Perkins thanked the two men and then rushed Jett to the vet where it was determined that he was OK.
“He would’ve died if I didn’t stop,” Perkins told WHSV 3. “He would have been dead. If I had driven 10 more minutes, he wouldn’t have made it.”
Of course, in all of the excitement, Perkins had neglected to finds out Jett’s saviors’ names. Luckily, with the help of her daughter, Perkins was able to find Holt on social media. It seemed Holt had been trying to find her as well to check on how Jett was doing.
They met the next day so that Perkins could thank them both properly. The men were relieved that Jett was OK and were just glad that they could help save his life.
