With no thought for his own safety, cop runs into a burning home to save a trapped dog
Police officers put their lives on the line every day. Most of them look at doing so as just another part of doing their job.
One Racine, Wisconsin, police officer is being hailed as a hero after saving a dog from a burning home. And the whole dramatic rescue was caught on his body camera.
Arriving at the scene of a fire
Officer Corey Radke, with the Village of Caledonia Police Department, was on the way home from work when he spotted smoke. A K9 handler with the department, Radke, and his K9 partner Lou stopped to see how they could help out.
The first to arrive at the house, Radke asked if anyone was inside as he approached the home.
He was told that some dogs might still be in the home. Not hesitating, Radke kicked in the door of the garage and entered the home, which was quickly becoming engulfed in flames. As he made his way inside, he called out for any dogs that might have still been in the home.
A dramatic rescue caught on body cam
Caught on Radke’s body camera, the dramatic scene played out as the officer entered the home calling for any dogs inside.
“Come here, puppy! Come here, pups!” Radke said in the footage.
Sure enough, he found a dog, named Deezel, on the couch. Grabbing the terrified dog, Radke exited the home. After getting Deezel to safety, the dedicated officer tried to reenter the home to see if any more dogs were inside, but he had to leave due to the smoke.
Officers are heroes in dog rescue
Fortunately, firefighters who had responded to the scene by that point were able to find another dog, named Fido, in the bedroom. He was also rescued from the burning home.
“Fire department went in there and ended up taking out a window and crawling in there and getting the dog out, bringing them out of the smoke,” Radke told FOX 6 Now. “It was like a little Lion King moment there.”
Both dogs ended up being OK. The homeowners were not home at the time of the fire.
A dog lover at heart
When asked about his bravery, Radke described himself as a dog lover and would have done the same if his home was on fire, where his K9 Lou lives with him.
The homeowners met with Radke later on and thanked him for saving their beloved dogs. In addition to their kids giving him some cards that they made, they also gave Radke a LEGO squad car to thank him.
