Some things in life are so damn irritating. Thanks to one police officer, the annoyance of improper parking could soon be a thing of the past.
People who park lazily are undoubtedly the irritatingest humans. Yes, even more so than people who make up fake words.
If only there was a way to embarrass these lazy parkers into being more considerate. That’s exactly what one police officer of Southlake thought. So he did something about it.
If you think about it, there’s a wide range of things that people can to do stop others parking in a thoughtless fashion.
Sadly, slashing tires, scraping curse words onto doors, smashing windscreens and other common-sense solutions are illegal. Luckily, one Southlake police officer invented something that would embarrass the haphazard parkers without breaking any laws.
It all started when Officer Brad Uptmore saw his son using a coloring book one morning.
That was when he realized something: Kids know how to stay in the lines when coloring. So why can’t drivers?
The next day in the office, Brad opened Microsoft Paint and created possibly the most effective leaflet of all time:
It was patronizing in the most perfect way. The text expertly balanced friendliness and passive-aggressiveness.
It provided a police badge for coloring in like a big boy or girl. And last but certainly not least, the message was written in comic-sans, the most hated font in the entire world.
Officer Brad started placing the leaflet on cars that parked incorrectly, prioritizing those that veered into disabled spaces.
Soon, the rates of improper parking in Southlake started to decline. There was no way that it was a coincidence.
It turns out that the British have been right all along: the key to creating positive change is through being condescending.
Soon, Officer Brad’s leaflets started making waves on social media. The police officer gained praise for making his community a better place and for doing so in such a unique way. People have been saying things like this:
Since the leaflet went viral, Officer Brad has been assigned to handle his police department’s social media strategy.
He has created a range of memes and funny posts, all in the name of upholding the law.
One thing that Officer Brad has shown is that problems can be solved with creativity.
Of course, Officer Brad could have handed out a fine or a citation. But he realized that humor and comparison could work better, so he put it to the test. And look how chuffed he is now:
This is the kind of attitude that more people need to have. If you have a persistent problem, then you need to look for new solutions.
Clearly, the tried and tested methods aren’t working. So why not try something that you haven’t tried before?
The great thing about Officer Brad’s solution is that it can be applied to a whole range of other situations.
If someone else is doing something wrong, all you need to do is compare it to a children’s activity and highlight how kids have a better understanding of not doing the thing wrong. Try it yourself and see if it works!
