Cops mistake frozen kitten for ice-chunk but now she’s healing miraculously
Blizzards are absolutely devastating and the extremely cold temperatures also make things very tough for people and animals alike. During a recent blizzard is Saskatchewan, Canada, a poor kitten fell victim to the almost sub-zero temperatures and nearly froze to death.
Two officers of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police actually thought that the kitten was a large chunk of ice!
Luckily, they realized just in time that it wasn’t a block of ice, but an animal in urgent need of help and warmth. Cpl. Sean Chiddenton remembers when he first met the frozen kitten and wrote a few words on the RCMP Facebook page.
“I saw something on the road at the last second and swerved around it,” the police officer posted. “I thought it was a chunk of ice that had fallen off a semi at first, but then thought it looked like an animal.”
This all happened while he was driving, and his colleague Cst. Ryan Oram accidentally hit the – seeming – ice block.
There was no more time to move out of the way and the kitten was hit by the car that passed it. Thankfully, the impact wasn’t severe.
Just like his colleague, the officer feared it might be an animal and the two immediately pulled over their cars to investigate.
“[Oram] backed up and the partially-frozen lump stood up and started walking towards him,” Chiddenton recalls. “It was a small orange kitten nearly frozen.”
They figured that the kitten was a stray and couldn’t find a warm place to hide.
The two officers speculate that the kitten actually crawled underneath or in a vehicle to look for some warmth and shelter during the storm, but that clearly didn’t end well.
The ginger kitten then seemingly got lost on the road, but luckily there wasn’t too much traffic that put him in danger.
However, the temperature had definitely gotten to him and he was severely suffering from the cold. The young cat still showed signs of life, however, as he kept meowing.
The two officers knew that they had to do everything in their power to make sure this poor animal would make it.
“He wasn’t moving very much, but was meowing non-stop,” the post said. “Cst. O picked him up and put him in his truck and we dropped him off at the veterinary clinic. I checked in later to see what happened and was happy to see the little guy was alive and alert and meowing away!”
The story was later picked up by a news station, who talked to one of the vets who treated the kitty, Dr. Catherine Colodey.
Apparently, the doctor at the Prairie Animal Health Centre said that the ginger kitten was nearly frozen solid. It wouldn’t be a stretch to mistake him for an ice block.
Things didn’t look good for a while, as the vets struggled to increase his body temperature.
“We actually couldn’t even get a body temperature to register for him until about 45 minutes of working to try and get his body temperature to increase,” Dr. Cooley said. “He was obviously very hypothermic and very frostbitten.”
Luckily, the animal’s condition started improving with a few warm baths and a couple of hot meals also helped. The progress he made was nothing short of miraculous.
In fact, everyone who was involved loved it when the kitten’s personality started to come back.
“Then his attitude and personality started coming back and it was just very rewarding for us for sure and even more so for the kitten,” the vet added.
The kitten was named Ambrose and is now thriving!
His tail had to be amputated because the frostbite damage was too severe, but the cat is completely healthy otherwise.
Little Ambrose also found himself a loving forever home at the rescue center, as one of the vets over there fell in love with him and adopted him. Just look at that adorable cutie!
