Lexi is a sweet German Shepherd who got lost on a busy highway, specifically the Interstate 495 in Massachusetts. She was confused and scared by the moving cars passing her way. She tried to run and dodge the cars but ended up in a circle.

People passing by saw the poor dog, so they called the police to help.

The Massachusetts State Police were prepared to help Lexi, but they have to create a plan that will ensure the safety of the drivers and the scared dog. They can’t run in the middle of the highway chasing after Lexi. They must devise a simple, but effective plan to gain Lexi’s trust and help her get back home.

They first thought of encouraging Lexi to get off the busy road.

This proved to be a failure because Lexi bounded back into the rush of traffic. Drivers were alarmed at the wandering dog because they try their best not to hit her while keeping a keen eye on the rushing cars. With the first plan failing miserably, they need to create a new one where they can all be safe.

After a few minutes, they were able to reach an agreement to close the highway.

To do so, they must coordinate with other agencies: officers from the Methuen Police Department and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. Once they were able to brief them on the plan, they closed the roads to avoid Lexi running into a car. Then, it was time for them to bring out the secret weapon.

Their secret to persuading Lexi is a granola bar.

State trooper Malachy Higgins thought of offering a granola bar in encouraging Lexi to climb into the car, so they can bring her back home. Opening the granola bar, they presented it to a tired and hungry Lexi. Come on Lexi, we know that you want it!

Instantly, Lexi bounded for the granola bar!

“The dog jumped into the driver’s seat and sat behind the wheel. Trooper Higgins got into the cruiser and got the tired pooch to move over into the passenger seat.” the Massachusetts State Police said in a Facebook post.

“I just wanted to give her the impression that she was going to eat something to get her into the cruiser,” Higgins said in an interview with Boston Herald. “We actually gave her some dog food once we got off the highway.”

Lexi never got to eat the granola bar because she might be allergic to nuts. As for Trooper Higgins, he drove her off the highway. Everyone was happy that the lovely German Shepherd was safe from har. All it took was a piece of granola bar.

They turned her over to Lawrence Animal Control, who contacted Lexi’s family.
