Grandma's old country bread recipe is so simple and easy to bake
Bread is delicious and goes with anything. It’s also taken for granted a lot. Someone’s got to bake it first before it finds its way into your groceries or sandwiches.
“Sure, I’ll try baking my own” you might say. That’s a great call, but where are you going to start looking for recipes? There’s a ton out there and it might be hard to choose.
How about you take a look at this country bread recipe and give it a try?
The great thing about bread is that being so simple, there are tons of ways people have put their own spin on it. Sweet bread, whole-grain, raisin bread, you name it.
This one’s no different.
Start with 400g of wheat flour in a bowl.
It’s best to divide the flour into 3 parts and add them all in one by one. Then add about 300ml of warm water.
Bread isn’t bread without yeast, and you’ll need about 3 grams of it for this recipe. Add it into the bowl for this step.
Don’t be lazy with the mixing. Mix it well, and then add a bit more flour!
And of course, salt. About 2 teaspoons of it.
Now onto the important part: kneading the dough!
Knead it thoroughly before covering the bowl with a clear, plastic wrapper. Make sure to seal it well so the yeast can do its thing.
Give it about 6 hours, and the dough should rise by a good amount. This is how you make bread!
Sift flour onto the table to start shaping it. Of course, make sure your table is clean too.
Roll the dough as well as you can then prepare a bowl and a clean, dry towel. Cover the bowl with the towel and line the surface with more flour.
Into the bowl the dough goes, and then wrap up the sides of the towel until the thing is covered up nice and snug.
Then cover it with another towel.
Wait about 2 hours again and it should be ready for the next step, which involves a 16cm-wide bowl and some parchment paper.
Place the dough into the bowl with the paper lining the underside.
Then make some cuts before preheating the oven to put the bowl inside.
This is bread after all, so leave a bowl of water in the oven too on the bottom layer. Then bake it for 30 minutes at 230℃ (440℉).
Your bread is nearly done, and believe me when I say it’s going to taste as good as it looks.
After those 30 minutes are up, open the oven door and remove the water bowl. This bread will need a second session in the oven. Bake it again without the water bowl for 20-25 minutes at a lower temperature of 210℃ (410℉).
When the wait is over, you can take it out of the oven and see just how great it looks.
And you did that all by yourself too!
Now the door’s open. What are you going to pair with this bread? Olive oil? Cheese? Or just have it on its own?
