Couple is accidentally handed large bag of cash at a McDonald’s drive-thru
Wouldn’t it be nice if you could just order a bag of money? That’s what accidentally happened to one Hermitage, Tennessee couple who got the wrong order at the McDonald’s drive-thru.
It all happened back in 2013, but the story is still making the rounds because people can’t help but marvel at the incident.
Greg Terry and his wife Stacye drove away from the fast-food restaurant before looking in the bag. But when they went to eat their breakfast, did they realized that they didn’t get food – instead, the bag was full of three clear bags of cash and change totaling in the thousands of dollars.
“My husband opened the bag and discovered the money inside,” said Stacye Terry. “He said, âYou are not going to believe this.'”
It was cash from the register that was supposed to be taken to the bank but it somehow got mixed in with the to-go orders instead (note: never use a McDonald’s bag to store thousands of dollars).
It was âa fair amount of money. I could have done some shopping,â Mrs. Terry joked.
And while plenty of people think they would have just kept quiet, the store realized the mistake quickly and a very stressed out employee managed to catch up with the Terrys at their home.
She told them it was the store’s deposit and the couple gave the cash back immediately.
âIt was the right thing to do,â Mr. Terry told NewsChannel 5.
It was also the legal thing to do.
The employee was “shaken” and “visibly upset” according to Mrs. Terry.
âThe second that she said it was their deposit, my first thing was letâs get in the truck and take it back,â Mrs. Terry said. âThere is no other way to have it. I couldnât live with myself.â
The couple said again and again that they hoped no one would lose their job over the incident, which they believed was just an honest mistake. But McDonald’s obviously planned to investigate how it happened.
Phil Gray, the owner and operator of the McDonaldâs, responded to the bizarre incident:
“We are grateful for this customer and the action they took upon realizing out error. We are looking into why this mistake happened, but what is most important to us is knowing that we are part of a community with the values that were evidenced by this personâs actions.”
Before returning the money, the Terrys even posted some photos of it on Facebook. (We’d love to see the comments on THAT post!)
The couple says they play to return to the restaurant and are looking forward to seeing what’s in their bag next – though they really just want the food they ordered.
“We’ll be back. We’ll be back,” said Mr. Terry. “But, next time I’m sure we’ll leave with our normal breakfast order. This will never, ever happen again in our lifetime.”
