Couple believe they’re adopting 6-year-old girl only to learn she’s a fully grown woman

If one would say that a story is made for movie screens, you’d think of it as something so amazing and inspiring.

However, not all things in real life pan out that way.

And at these times, the movie screen story ends up in an unusual genre.

A couple adopted a little girl in 2010 as they wanted to grow their family a little bit bigger.

And through the process, they hoped they can change someone’s life for the better.

Kristine and Michael Barnett from Florida adopted a Ukranian child.

Natalia was just six.

As an orphan, life was difficult for her because she has been bouncing back and forth between the orphanage and different foster families.

To add to that, Natalia was also said to be suffering from a form of dwarfism so she looked smaller than her age. Still, the Barnetts wanted to give her a good life.

Everything was going well and she was the perfect addition to the five Barnett kids.

But all of those changed one fateful night.

Kristine was about to give Natalia a bath when she pulled her husband aside. She found something so strange and alarming that led her to believe that Natalia was lying to them.

She shared with her husband that Natalia had features of girls who have gone through puberty.

They believed she was just six but the biological evidence, according to them, was saying otherwise.

“Natalia was a woman. She had periods. She had adult teeth. She never grew a single inch, which would happen even with a child with dwarfism,” the Barnetts said as quoted by BBC.

Then, everything started falling apart.

With mistrust sown, the Barnetts said that Natalia “changed.” They alleged that their adopted girl was planning to kill their whole family.

Kristine said that Natalia threatened to stab their entire family while they were asleep, tried to poison her coffee, and push her onto an electric fence.

Natalia denied all of these allegations.

She said during her appearance on Dr. Phil that while she has a history of hurting someone, she reiterated that it was entirely by accident.

The family then moved Natalia to an apartment.

She lived in the apartment alone while her entire adoptive family moved to Canada. She only knew of the news when the police told her what had happened.

The court then pursued the couple for abandonment.

Both parents were acquitted but also filed for divorce.

In their defense, the Barnetts accused Natalia of lying about her age. They said she could not be neglected if she was already of age to look after herself.

The apartment was paid for and was supplied.

The case was sensational because it sounded exactly like a plot of a movie.

The 2009 film Orphan told a story about a couple who adopted a little girl who turned out to be a grown woman who had a condition that stunted her growth.

The film showed the titular character murdering people, especially those who were close to learning the truth.
