This couple adopted seven siblings after reading a heartbreaking end to their parents' lives
Social media is not only a place for us to connect with different people, but we can also get daily news. Usually, we share these news clips, so other people can be informed. Sometimes we donate to people who needed help. However, this couple took helping at a different length.
After scrolling through Facebook, this lovely couple did something sweet and inspiring.
It was a normal day for Pam Willis. She was scrolling through Facebook when she came across a heartbreaking news story. Moved by the story, she decided to take action.
The story was about seven siblings who lost their parents in a car crash in May 2018.
For more than a year, they have been looking for a home. Back in 2018, their car flipped onto the side which leads to their parents suffering from fatal injuries. The kids were also injured, but it wasn’t life-threatening.
Once they were able to recover, the four brothers and three sisters were put up for adoption.
Upon seeing the post, pam couldn’t stop staring at their hopeful faces. She was moved and she had this intense feeling that she was supposed to be their mom. Quickly, she tagged her husband, US Navy veteran Gary Willis, 53, so he would see the write-up.
“I can’t explain it — I just knew I was supposed to be their mom,” the 50-year-old told TODAY Parents.
The couple shares five adult children and has been fostering kids for years. However, they had never discussed adopting before. Pam was even scared that Gary will not support her since they were close to retiring.
“I thought Gary was going to tell me I was wacko — we were getting ready to retire,” Pam recalled.
To her surprise and joy, Gary was also moved like she was. He also wanted to adopt the kids.
That same night, they called the number at the bottom of the article. However, there were already a lot of calls from people interested in the children. They were heartbroken that they can’t be their parents.
But, a miracle happened!
After two months, Pam and Gary were matched with the siblings-Adelino, 15, Ruby, 13, Aleecia, 9, Anthony, 8, Aubriella, 7, Leo, 5, and Xander, 4. As they get to know the kids during the screening process, they learned that they experienced a great deal of trauma, and it’s not because of the accident.
The truth was their late parents battled with addiction, and the family often stayed in homeless encampments. It was heartbreaking to learn about their story. But, it helped them learn how to connect with the kids.
“I think they didn’t quite trust that we were real. Like maybe we were going to go away,” she said. “I think it’s so hard to trust when so much has been taken from your life. Ruby didn’t know how to be a kid. She had to be a mother figure at a very young age.”
When the kids moved in June 2019, there were a lot of adjustments.
The kids struggled with sleep and frequently had nightmares. One night, her then 7-year-old came into their room. When Pam asked if she had a bad dream, she replied, “No, I just wanted to make sure that you were still here.” To prove to them that they were stying, they officially adopted them in August 2020.
Their adult biological children were also present during the virtual ceremony.
“It was awesome,” Pam recalled. “We brought a big TV screen out to the park so everybody could watch and cheer and be safe during COVID. There was so much love.”
Their story inspired a lot of people in the world. They even created an Instagram account to share their journey. To know more about the family, check their official Instagram account.
