Life is beautiful and unpredictable. Just when you think you are living the best life, something magical happens that will change your destiny.

It was August 28, 2000, and it was the usual busy night in the city. Everyone was in a rush to get home. Danny Stewart, 34, was one of those busy people who happen to be in the New York subway station that day.

As he remembers, it was around 8 in the evening, and he was on his way to meet his partner, Pete Mercurio, 32, to have dinner. As he was on his way, he noticed something lying on the subway.

At first, he thought it was just a toy doll, so he ignored it and went up the subway stairs.

Just then, as he looked one last time at the “toy doll” he noticed that the doll’s legs started to move. Without a second thought, Danny rushed back down the stairs to check what he thought was a doll.

His suspicions were confirmed, and Danny was shocked as he saw a newborn baby wrapped in a sweatshirt. The poor baby didn’t even have any clothes on, and his umbilical cord is still attached. It looked like the baby was just a day old.

Danny started to panic as he yelled out for help.

Unfortunately, almost no one in that busy subway helped him. He was so nervous that he wasn’t able to pick up the newborn baby. It was so tiny, and he was afraid that the baby might be hurt.

He rushed to the payphone and called 911. He told them the story and the location, but he was still worried that they might not believe him. After all, it was not the first time that someone called 911 as a prank call.

He then phoned Pete and told him what happened.

Pete rushed to the subway and saw that the police were already there. They were on their way to transport the newborn to the hospital. The couple then went home after giving their initial statement.

Deep inside, the two of them knew that this baby will change their lives.

Danny and Pete returned to their usual daily routine until one day, Danny was called by the Administration for Children’s Services to testify to a family court hearing about he found the baby boy.

They informed Danny that as much as possible, they wanted to place the baby in pre-adoptive foster care. Then, the judge asked him a question that he didn’t even expect.

“Would you be interested in adopting this baby?”

Even though he was shocked, Danny immediately said “yes.”

“I had not had thoughts of adopting,” Danny said in his interview with BBC, “but at the same time, I could not stop thinking that… I did feel connected, I felt like this was not even an opportunity, it was a gift, and how can you say no to this gift.”

Danny, who was a bit nervous, shocked, and excited, called his partner, Pete, and told him about the news.

Over the next few weeks, the couple discussed this life-changing decision. According to Pete, they were tense conversations.

Pete liked how they lived their lives, and he didn’t want that to change. Aside from that, for him, they weren’t even ready to be parents.

The discussion about adopting the baby went so far that they almost called it quits.

Danny even said that even if Pete won’t go through with it, he will. Even if that means he’ll be a single parent.

Pete still didn’t approve of the idea, but he did agree to accompany Danny to the place where the baby was staying. There, they saw that it was not the ideal place for the little boy to stay.

Danny held the little baby in his arms; he looked at him and said, “Remember me?”

Then, Pete took the baby and held him. The little boy looked at Pete and squeezed his finger so hard. From that moment on, Pete knew in his heart that they were already a family.

Danny and Pete made sure that they will legalize everything as soon as possible.

The couple decided to name the beautiful baby boy Kevin, who was legally adopted by Danny and Pete on December 17, 2002.

Their beautiful story inspired Pete, a playwright and web designer, to create an adorable picture book called “Subway Baby.” It was about Kevin’s story and how the little baby found his parents on a busy subway.

Today, Kevin is now 20 years old and over six feet tall!

He’s even taller than his parents and is studying computer science and mathematics.

The little baby that they found in the subway is now a successful young man, who is respectful, kind, and sweet. Kevin’s parents are just so proud of him.

Looking back, Danny and Pete couldn’t imagine life without their precious baby. That fateful day, when Danny found little Kevin changed their lives forever.
