Beth and Michael, both animal lovers, found themselves at the local shelter in December 2015. They only intended to look and nothing more. But their holiday season was about to take an unexpected turn when they saw Rocky.

While at Anne Arundel County Animal Control, one dog caught their attention and tugged on their heartstrings. The couple learned that Rocky, now at the age of 17, had been in and out of the shelter for the past three years. They both thought this big yet gentle dog would have to spend the rest of his life in a kennel.

But with an instant connection, that wasn’t going to happen.

As Beth stated, “We were there to donate all kinds of stuff that I rounded up with my military community and I saw Rocky walk in and I couldn’t stop thinking about that adorable old face. Next thing I know, I’m walking out with Rocky.”

Heading to his forever home.

In perfect timing, Beth and Michael brought Rocky home for the Christmas holiday.

What Beth did next is enough to bring tears to your eyes. She wrote a letter to her new furry friend, telling him how much he was loved and that no matter, she’ll give him a safe and loving home. No more going back to the shelter.

Beth wrote Rocky a heartfelt letter.

The letter Beth wrote was shared on Facebook by Anne Arundel County Animal Control. Her letter read:

“I took you on knowing we were going to have to take extra care of you. Knowing that one day you weren’t going to make it outside in time to use the restroom and I would have to clean it up, I knew one day I was going to have to carry you up the stairs when you no longer have the strength to do it. I knew you were going to eventually lose your hearing and eyesight and we were going to have to spend extra money to make the house safer for you. I knew one day I am going to have to say goodbye to you. But until then you are the best gift I have ever gotten and I’m really sad I couldn’t give you the best 17 years you deserved but I promise you’ll have a great life from now to the day I have to say goodbye.”

Rocky made himself right at home.

In no time, Rocky settled into his new surroundings. Beth and Michael spoiled him from day one. Everywhere the couple went, their new dog followed. And at nap time, turns out he’s great at snuggling. He even enjoyed an occasional cup of doggie ice cream.

Keeping a promise.

As explained by Beth, “Rocky may have had some bad years but I made a promise to him however lone he may be here will be filled with joy and love and lots of treats.” She added, “He definitely brought a missing puzzle piece into our life and we are more than happy to be his parents.”

Then came another member of the family.

After giving birth to the couple’s daughter, Hazel, they weren’t worried at all as to how Rocky would respond. Their instincts were right – he was overly excited and happy.

While no one knows how many more years Rocky has, there’s no question that Beth and Michael will take good care of him just as promised.
