Having a newborn brightens your life with joy, love, happiness, and laughter. But some things aren’t all sunshine.

Crying in the middle of the night, for example, or changing diapers now and then?

Most experts agree that between the ages of 18 and 24 months, parents can teach their babies to use the toilet.

It’s normal for babies if they’re not ready until they’re three.

One couple rather managed to surprise everyone and make parents all over the world curious.

How? They taught their baby to use the potty when he was only two weeks old.

In case you’re wondering how they accomplished such a seemingly impossible feat… They decided to share their story on their YouTube channel.

Montana Lower and Tom Lindwood from Byron Bay, Australia, created the channel “On The Way by Montana Lower.”

They post videos about their lives regularly. As they described, “It’s not about the destination – but what happens On the Way.”

They’re a young family traveling in a bus and influencers expressing themselves through painting and murals.

Their success was achieved through the use of a technique known as “Elimination Communication (EC).”

Their baby hasn’t needed diapers since he was two weeks old. Blue, their adorable baby girl, doesn’t seem to mind that she no longer has to wear a diaper.

Her parents had to keep an eye out for signs that she needed to use the washroom. That’s why Blue appears to have developed some sort of learned behavior.

In a nutshell, the elimination communication process relies on parents. It is recognizing when their baby requires toilet time. They take the baby to the toilet when they notice one of these cues.

Lower and Linwood used this method in their own home and it worked better than expected.

Diapers are no longer necessary and even mom was surprised at how well everything went.

Lower was skeptical of elimination communication when she first heard about it. It only took her one day of taking it seriously. Truly committing to noticing cues and bringing Blue to the potty or toilet.

Blue now looks at either her mother or father whenever she needs to go.

“Babies are born with absolutely no preconceived knowledge of how to go to the bathroom and so if we don’t teach them to go in their nappy, then we don’t have to unteach them,” Lower metioned in the video.

So, how do you recognize these signals that your baby needs to use the toilet?

It’s quite similar to something that most parents can see quite clearly — whenever their child is hungry.

Elimination communication is essentially the same, though not every baby exhibits the same cues, so your mileage may vary.

The couple chose the elimination communication method for a variety of reasons.

“The biggest reason why we started taking Blue to the toilet at 2 weeks old is learning that being left to sit in a soiled diaper can add to shame and disassociation with our intimate areas — especially for girls. And it makes sense!”

Elimination communication has grown in popularity over the years. However, like most things, it has advantages and drawbacks.

Of course, no one can deny that this is much cleaner and more comfortable for both parties.

Some experts believe that it strengthens the bond between babies and their parents and helps them gain self-esteem.

Alternatively, elimination communication isn’t always better, especially if you’re still learning.

You also need commitment and plenty of time, though Blue’s parents didn’t need weeks for their plan to work — a single day was enough. That’s a huge relief!
