Couple sees all of the city’s stray dogs and immediately take action
Stray animals are common in cities, and most suburban towns have at least a few domesticated animals living in the streets.
As animal lovers, we dream of giving homes to all of the homeless dogs and cats we see. Unfortunately, this is often impractical, but there are still many people rallying behind this cause.
In San Felipe, Mexico, there is one couple that has dedicated their lives to helping stray animals in need. This is no small task. There are so many dogs in this city that the rescues have been totally unable to help a group of dogs living by the marina.
A couple, Diane Perrigo and Alan Horton, have invested many volunteer hours with local animal rescues in an effort to feed the dogs in the local area.
However, recently the two have stepped up their efforts by founding San Felipe Marina Dogs Group.
The organization is based on building and planting dog food dispensers in public areas around the San Felipe Marina. The dispensers are made of simple PVC pipe and filled with dry food donated mostly by the people of the city. This way, the dogs with empty bellies don’t have to go far to find a free meal!
The couple has wasted no time since founding their organization. They have built several DIY dog food dispensers and mounted them in areas where hungry dogs give them plenty of use.
The feeders are designed to hold enough food that they won’t have to be refilled by someone for a couple of days. This means that a handful of dogs could be fed by one feeder!
Since the couple and their rescue have made progress on their project, they have been able to befriend some of the more skittish dogs, who before eating at the feeders, would not have been approachable.
This has created the opportunity for these stray dogs to be taken into the monthly spay and neuter clinic at the San Felipe Dog Rescue.
This is the best way to control stray populations for years to come.
Diane and Alan are two of many animal lovers who volunteer their free time to help local animals. San Felipe Marina Dogs Group has grown to include a number of dedicated volunteers who donate the necessary dog food and others who work to continuously refill the feeders.
San Felipe is clearly a city of animal lovers because the San Felipe Dog Rescue is run completely by volunteers who are passionate about making a difference in the life of animals
The feeders cost only $10 to assemble and mount around town including the fresh dog food that is used to fill the feeders every day.
Diane and Alan are always hoping for donations toward their monthly food budget, and so is the San Felipe Dog Rescue for their medical and fostering expenses.
We animal-lovers are endlessly thankful for passionate animal advocates like those in San Felipe. They make a significant difference in the lives of so many animals who are used to living in need and scrounging for every meal.
