Couple builds giant bed so they can sleep with their eight rescue dogs

Meet Chris and Mariesa Hughes, who just may be better known as the Doggy Brady-Bunch. The couple both have an enormous pair of hearts beating in their chest, and they both predominantly beat for their dogs…all eight of them.

The pair of star-crossed dog lovers have dedicated their entire lives to rescuing pups and placing them in forever homes. As anyone could expect, though, they’ve fallen in love with a fair few of their own. Now they’re upsizing in a really big way to keep their furbaby’s cozy and warm.

When the adorable couple first came together, each of them had their own large fur-family to bring to the table. Chris had a big pack of six loving dogs while Mariesa had another two.

“[Chris] had a rescue before The Mr. Mo Project called ‘Rowdy to the Rescue’. He was fostering Moses at the time then ended up keeping him. Sam had a lot of fear and anxiety and was never adopted out and Meatball has been returned three times. So then, he had the 6 [dogs],” Mariesa explais in an interview with ABCNews.

When the time came for the couple’s six dogs to meet, everyone held their breath a little. Thankfully, though, they were all jazzed about their new fur-siblings and got along fabulously.

Tragically, Moses received a cancer diagnosis and crossed the rainbow bridge just two years after Chris and Mariesa decided to blend families. Mariesa had fallen in love with Moses from the day she met him, and so they were both heartbroken after the loss of their beloved rescue.

The couple knew that they wanted to do something to honor the memory of Moses.

So, they opened up a second rescue together and named it the Mr. Mo Project. The rescue caters exclusively to ill and senior dogs, helping to find them their forever homes.

When it comes to their dogs, well…there’s just nothing in the world that the couple loves more.

When the lovebirds decided to take the next step and move in with each other, they knew the first thing they wanted to do was put their doggy-pack first. The best way to do that? Build a custom, humongous, colossal-sized bed that could fit each and every one of them, of course. That includes Gremlin, Sam, Quinn, Meatball, Money, Tejas, Mabel, and The Stig!

That’s when the couple got in touch with Mike Ford, a locally renowned craftsman.

Touched by how much they cared for Moses and their pledge to do right by other dogs like him, Ford readily jumped at the chance to build their enormous bed.

“I’m a dog lover myself, especially senior dogs. They came up with the idea for the king-sized bed and asked me to come up with the concept to make it all work,” Ford recalls.

Ford didn’t hold out on either materials or craftsmanship while building the big bed. He crafted it using solid cherry wood, durable enough to support the weight of a bunch of tired, happy dogs, not to mention the couple themselves.

The considerate carpenter even went so far as to build a staircase for the smaller dogs in the Hughes crew, so they could easily climb up. He also included 3 sliding drawers in the side of the bed for extra storage.

What tied it all together, though, was the carved pawprints which Ford added as a courtesy and in honor of his own late furbaby, Bailey.

While the couple was totally thrilled with their finished bed, there were a few furry friends of theirs that loved it even more!

“I wake up and I think, ‘This is incredible. I’m like a contortionist with Stig spooning me and Gremlin between my legs and Sam sharing my pillow.’ They love it. They love to just be near us. So however we can make that happen, they’re happy,” explains Mariesa.

While the couple and their 8-pack of sweet furbabies love doing all sorts of things together, from snuggling on the couch to roaming the dog parks, we think it’s safe to say that lounging around in their humungous bed is their favorite pastime activity.
