Love can overcome cruelty.

Michelle and other rescuers were appalled and were “brought to their knees” when they emerged from a rescue operation.

Rescuers marched out from the house in question bringing out one emaciated dog after the other.

One of those dogs was Khaleesi.

Khaleesi’s state was almost indescribable in its cruelty.

In a Facebook post by Mutty Paws Rescue, they said that the dogs were deprived of food and love. And it was apparent in the dogs’ shape.

Khaleesi is a full-grown pittie but she only weighs 19.5lbs.

A typical dog her age is at least twice or thrice her weight.

Skin and bones

Every single bone in her body was protruding from her skin. She was literally bones covered with fur when they found her.

She was also infested with hookworm and it was almost impossible to feed her.

Her rescuers couldn’t come fast enough.

It made them realize that they arrived just in time because there was a high possibility that Khaleesi was just inches from death when they rescued her.

After some emergency intervention to stabilize her, she was fostered by Michelle.

Her family fed Khaleesi in small frequent amounts to reacclimatize her body to its normal functions and get them out of survival mode.

Their first goal was to help her get back on her feet, quite literally, so that she could gain the basic function of walking and running.

At first, they were feeding Khaleesi directly.

As she progressed, they started leaving her food a few steps away from her to coax her to stand up.

The progress was slow but it was there, and they could see Khaleesi’s efforts all throughout.

From a few steps, they left the food across the room.

She got up and walked to it.

Then they stood around 20 feet, and then 40 feet. All those times, Khaleesi was doing her best to get to where they are.

They knew she wanted to get back to being a dog.

Her heart was there and all they had to do was to make sure that she gets the right support.

Then, she met Sonny.

Sonny is a pittie like Khaleesi.

The moment Khaleesi arrived at their home, Sonny was quickly onto her case.

He welcomed her and stayed with her.

When she couldn’t stand, Sonny “shrugged” and just laid down next to her so they can play.

One of their favorite games is tug-of-war and as they played these games frequently, inadvertently helping Khaleesi as it strengthened her bones and muscles.

But there was one problem.

Despite their efforts, Michelle and her family were seeing people telling them about their “foster failure”.

They didn’t know what that meant back then until they realized that those words meant well.

Michelle formally adopted Khaleesi.

By the time of her adoption, she had gained significant weight and had proven to be very agile and athletic

. It was so far from the state they saw her and it was all because of genuine love and support.

She may have lived a life of cruelty, but through kindness and compassion, Khaleesi finally got back to what she’s supposed to be – a family dog that will be loved for the rest of her days.
