Couple mocks foster mom and the kids in checkout line – Another woman in line claps back
Some people are very quick to judge others. When a couple saw a woman with five kids around her, they immediately asked, “How many baby daddies do you think she has?”
Waiting in line at the supermarket is frustrating, sure. But there’s no need to mock people who are struggling to manage their kids at the checkout.
When the couple in this story saw a woman with five kids of different races struggling, they made some pretty prejudiced assumptions.
It all began when Lindsay Rae went to her local Walmart. As usual, she found that the lines in the store were very long.
So she picked the shortest looking one and waited. The woman in front of her had five children. She paid them very little attention, until a couple got in line behind her.
The couple started making fun of the woman with the five kids. They pointed out that the woman’s children were of different races and asked how many men the woman had slept with to produce all of them.
Lindsay looked at the kids and the mother in detail for the first time. However, unlike the couple, Lindsay could see that the woman was trying her hardest to control the kids.
Then the couple stated, “Just wait until she whips out the food stamps.”
When the woman got to the checkout, she did indeed take out a food stamp card. Then she started struggling with it, bringing more comments from the couple, this time about their taxes being wasted on the kids.
Lindsay decided that she’d had enough of the couple and did something to help the woman out. That’s when everyone around her learned the truth.
Lindsay walked up to the woman and asked, “Can I help?” The woman smiled at Lindsay. Then Lindsay asked, “Foster or adopted?”
The woman then answered “New foster mom. This is my first time using one of these. They came three days ago. Gonna be with us for a while.”
The woman then explained that she had had to buy the kids clothes from her own pocket, because the stipend had not yet come through.
So Lindsay helped the woman use the food stamp card and explained how she could use it more easily in the future. Once the purchase had been completed, Lindsay hugged the woman and told her that she was doing great.
The woman thanked her and walked away. Once the woman was out of earshot, Lindsay turned back to the couple and explained that the kids were not the woman’s biological children. Instead, they had come to her through the foster system just days ago.
Lindsay kept on explaining to the couple just how out of line their behavior was.
She explained the basic truth that even if those kids had been hers, they should still have had food stamps if they needed them, as “no child in this country or any other deserves to be cold or hungry.”
Everyone present, not just the couple, really learned a lesson in judging others.
Of course, this story really does highlight a sad truth about our society. Many people get misjudged by others, and that’s something that keeps them from taking on foster children and helping society in similar ways.
Luckily, there are also people like Lindsay Rae, who will go out of their way to help others and highlight why we shouldn’t just make assumptions about others.
