A couple from southeastern Tennessee woke up on the morning of May 1 to find a furry stranger sleeping in their bed.

Julie Thornton Johnson and Jimmy Johnson woke up at 4:00 a.m. and noticed a dog in bed but thought it was one of theirs. Jupiter, Hollis, and Zeppelin liked sleeping on the bed anyway.

Julie went back to sleep but at around 6:30 a.m., it was Jimmy who woke up.

“Julie, whose dog is this?” he asked quietly.

Julie rolled over and realized that the red nose pitbull-labrador mix laying between them wasn’t their dog.

Julie thought there was an intruder in their home, but she came to her senses and realized the pup just wanted shelter.

“We knew that she was of absolute no harm to us or our dogs,” she said. “She was just looking for a safe place. So, it totally turned into a comical, ‘Let’s take some photos with Nala.’”

The couple took some of photos of their situation, before Julie posted the amusing story on Facebook.

“This is the weirdest post I have ever had to make,” she wrote in the caption. “Is this your dog?”

The Johnsons didn’t know the pup’s name since there was no collar. But an hour after the post, Julie got a message from someone saying Nala was their dog.

Julie wanted proof from the would-be owner so the woman sent Christmas and Easter pictures, including other photos with Nala.

Felecia Johnson and Cris Hawkins shared that Nala slipped out of her collar the night before when Felecia’s father took the dog for a walk.

Nala ran into the woods, deciding play a game of tag as they tried to chase her. The dog came back but refused to go inside, so Felecia and Cris waited until the morning.

Nala decided to have a little fun.

No one knows how Nala got inside Julie’s home, but it’s possible the pup pushed a door open during the thunderstorm so she could get in and away from the rain.

Jimmy may have left the front door slightly open when he took the other three dogs outside for awhile.

Felecia arrived to get Nala, but it was like the dog didn’t want to leave.

“She’s almost as big as I am, but since she’s been a puppy, I carry her on my hip like she’s a little kid,” she said. “And now that she’s grown, she’s still expects me to do that. It’s a lot harder now, but I had to carry this big dog out of (Julie and Jimmy’s) house. If it wasn’t crazy enough. … I had to carry her out like a child.”

A few days later both families went on a fun puppy play date in the Johnson’s’ yard with all their dogs. Vanilla ice cream and treats for all!

It’s a hilarious story with a happy ending. Eight characters, that’s four humans and four dogs, forged a friendship thanks to an impromptu sleepover.
