Couple brings home ‘tiny’ puppy who just kept growing and growing
Adopt, don’t shop.
It’s the motto of every shelter in the world, and if everyone would give these poor animals a second chance at life, the world would definitely be a better place.
Unfortunately, a lot of shelters are having trouble finding a warm home for most of their dogs, especially if they’re already a bit older or dealing with a medical history.
Sue Marham visited a local shelter in Lincolnshire, England, and immediately fell in love with an adorable puppy, Yogi.
Her husband, however, wasn’t entirely on board yet.
Sue’s mission was clear: she had to convince her significant other to welcome this adorable four-footer into the home. And even though her husband Robert wasn’t very enthusiastic about having a dog, he figured that it wouldn’t be much of a problem because Yogi was a pretty small pooch.
Small dogs are easy to take care of and don’t eat much, right?
But Yogi wouldn’t stay pint-sized for long because he was actually a Boston Great Dane.
âWhen I saw Bear I fell in love with him and knew I wanted him- but I knew Robert didnât want a big dog,â Sue told CatersNews.
Yogi, who later received the nickname ‘Bear’ because of his size, was still quite small as a puppy, and Sue decided to bend the truth a little bit to get her husband on board. She told him that Yogi wasn’t a Great Dane, but rather a Jack Russell puppy. Of course, she wouldn’t be able to keep this going for long, but figured that her husband couldn’t say anything about it when the four-footer was already theirs.
âSo I told a little fib and said he was a Jack Russell. But it started to become fairly obvious when Bear dwarfed any other dogs in the village, so the game was up.â
At only five months old, Yogi was already bigger than an adult Jack Russel.
Sue then confessed to her husband, but he didn’t mind one bit! Just like Sue did at the shelter, Robert absolutely fell in love with this wonderful dog.
âI thought a big dog would be a lot of work and could be trouble. We only have a small living room. I thought, âHow much trouble can a Jack Russell be?ââ Robert recalls.
It didn’t take long before Yogi, or ‘Bear’, as some people liked to call him, began to grow to rather gigantic proportions. After nine years, Yogi is bigger than both of his owners and weighs a whopping 210 pounds.
And in order to grow, he certainly needs a lot of food.
Sue and Richard spend around 37 pounds on dog food every week, roughly equivalent to 50 dollars. Yogi is so big that he even has his own sofa. When he goes on walks in the winter, he even has to wear a horse coat because of his size.
Yogi considers himself a real person and even watches tv like everyone.
Even though his own sofa is considered holy, Yogi has ‘adopted’ a senior cat and best friend, Toffee.
âLast winter, an old female cat we call Toffee started coming in the house for warmthâŚWe thought Bear wouldnât be a fan, but instead he welcomed her onto his sofa and they often curl up and sleep togetherâŚBear sees Toffee as his own pet,â Sue said.
Even though Yogi’s size might be quite intimidating, he’s actually a really gentle giant who can make anyone fall in love with him.
Just ask Robert, who never complained once. In fact, they’re pretty much inseparable now!
