It doesn’t matter if you’re human, a dog, a cat, or even a cow – there is nothing greater and more powerful than motherly love. Most animals will do anything for their children, especially if they’re newborns. Parenthood is a term that’s used for more than humans, but and this special story about a mother cow is definitely proof of that.

Most mother animals are also really protective of their children, that’s why it’s usually not a great idea to pick up a baby animal freely. Their moms might see you as a threat and defend their children, with all its consequences. However, there are always exceptions of course – and some moms even build up a very trusting bond between them and humans, letting us interact with their children freely.

A man was simply passing by a farm on foot and noticed that one of the cows was really anxious and restless.

It all occurred in a beautiful, green open space in Millbrook, Ontario, and the man was there to take a couple of photographs of nature. He stepped off his motorcycle to take a few shots up close. The usual sight is just a herd of cows hanging around in the meadows and minding their own business, but this time, there was one cow that definitely stood out.

Most of the others were seen around the very wide pond, quenching their thirst and cooling off a bit as it was a hot summer day, but this one cow was standing near the fence and something was clearly off.

The passerby, Dave, knew that something was wrong. He was there to take some photo’s and video’s of the farm and the surrounding area but made his way to the distressed cow first.

The animal, named Flo, was clearly trying to grasp Dave’s attention. She kept looking at him while she was scratching the ground. The cow was clearly trying to communicate with Dave, although it took a couple of minutes before the man understood what she was trying to say. She scraped, scratched, looked, and moved – but then Dave finally realized how he could help.

In the meantime, the other cows were also drawn to Flo as her distress calls didn’t go unnoticed.

After looking for a little while, Dave suddenly spotted a newborn calf who was stuck on his side of the fence!

Flo was trying to get this man’s attention because he needed her to help out her baby! The situation definitely looked quite dire, as the calf looked malnourished, thirsty, and still had its umbilical cord attached. In other words – help was needed, and it was definitely urgent.

His first thought was to just make sure that this baby calf was reunited with momma cow, but he was scared that he would hurt the calf if he tried to move it. The fence was also electric, and even though it was set at the lowest electric setting, there was still a risk, of course. Somehow, the man managed to slip the calf back through the fence to safety on the other side. It’s likely that mom received some shocks in the process, but it never hurt any of the three involved.

Finally – this calf was free again and it seemed like the baby cow was almost immediately doing better now that it was reunited with mom and the rest of the herd.

Dave later visited the farm owners to tell them all about what happened, and they actually offered him to say hi to Flo and her calf once again, on the same side of the fence this time.

It turns out that these two still remembered Dave, and it’s actually a pretty heartwarming thing to witness. This momma cow in need bonded with a kind stranger who was more than willing to help out, and it just warmed everyone’s heart.
