The great thing about music is that it is there for everyone to enjoy. It doesn’t matter what it sounds like. As long as you enjoy it, it’s your music.
Country themed bars filled with guests wearing cowboy hats are a lot of fun. But just because the bar is country-themed doesn’t mean they can’t play other kinds of music.
One video really showcases this. It opens with a bunch of cowboys and cowgirls stood in the middle of a bar that’s straight out of the Old West.
But the song playing is about as far from country music as you could imagine.
Wobble by the hip-hop/rap musician V.I.C is playing. There’s a famous dance that goes with Wobble, and this is the cowboys and cowgirls’ interpretation.
The cowboys and cowgirls move back and forth in unison. And there’s no doubt that they’re moving like hip-hop dancers and country dancers.
Later, some of the dancers pair off on the stage. And their dancing becomes even more intense. An announcer says, “all right!”
Then two of the cowboys fall to the floor and start doing push-ups to the song.
By the end of the dance, everyone in the bar is impressed. It isn’t what any of the customers were expecting to see, but they are pleased that they did.
Someone then uploaded the footage of this dance onto YouTube. It proved to be popular on the site, gaining hundreds of thousands of views. To date, it has received more than 420,000 views. It also has over 4,300 likes and 350 comments. People have been saying things like this:
And that isn’t the only performance that the cowboys and cowgirls have shown off in that bar. In fact, there are many!
Of course, the original Wobble dance is a little different to the one that the cowboys and cowgirls did in this video. Here’s the original music video that showed the world the first ever version of the Wobble dance:
Mixing country music with rap/hip-hop is nothing new. In fact, it dates all the way back to the 1980s.
For instance, in 1980, one of the first country/hip-hop songs was Western Gangster Town by Trickeration.
But some people argue that rap style country music goes even further back than this.
For instance, certain Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash country songs have singing that some consider to be similar to rapping. And even then, some say that Woodie Guthrie’s singing in the 1940s inspired Dylan’s spoken rap-like singing.
So you could argue that cowboys and cowgirls have been dancing to hip-hop music since the Second World War.
It sure is a strange thought. And does that mean that Woodie Guthrie of all people is the great-grandfather of rap? One thing that it does prove is that all music is connected. Everyone is allowed to enjoy it and be inspired by it. The dancers in this video already know that!
