While airhorns are normally used in trucks, buses, and emergency vehicles, there are also personal airhorns that are portable and serve a variety of purposes.

They are often used in sporting events, like football or ice hockey, but they are sometimes used as bicycle horns, too.

The most special thing about them, though, is that they can come in handy when someone is in danger.

And they are loud.

As Wikipedia explains, airhorns can be used as non-lethal weapons that can scare away the attacker thanks to their loud noise.

“For outdoor activities like hiking, hunting, cross-country skiing, canoeing, fishing, an air horn can be handy to frighten away unwanted or aggressive wildlife, signalling for help and to announce one’s location.”

Kerri and Larry Ruiz of Chatsworth, California, know how air horns can be used in case of emergency, so they have made sure to have several of them at home.

As Larry Ruiz explained, he has made sure to have one right by every exit and entry of the house.

They figured they might need one at some point, in case a coyote made its appearance in their backyard.

Well, that day finally came.

Indeed, one year ago, a coyote did make it into their backyard.

And it attacked their Chihuahua, Chico.

The couple simply adores their tiny dog, and they sometimes let him play outside.

While they usually make sure to be around, it just so happens that sometimes they cannot be there to supervise him, and that’s why they have surveillance cameras around the house.

One day, little Chico was playing outside while his human parents were inside the house.

At some point, the woman heard Chico’s bark. She didn’t like it.

Chico’s bark was alarming.

It was one of those barks that’s actually a cry for help.

So, Kerri looked at the surveillance video and saw a coyote having caught the little dog by the neck and dragging him away with him.

Kerri and her husband rushed outside.

In the meantime, Kerri was screaming that a coyote had taken Chico.

They were desperate and they kept looking for their beloved dog, but he was nowhere to be seen.

Moments later, Kerri had an idea. She ran inside the house and got hold of their secret weapon- the air horn.

One blast was enough.

It was able to scare the coyote away. Only a while later, the couple found little Chico badly hurt, but alive.

They took him to the vet, where the Chihuahua was treated for a broken rib and a few scratches, especially from the coyote’s tight grasp on his neck.

A few weeks later, Chico was back, healthy and happy as ever.

But his human parents promised to never let him play unattended again.
