Crane operator learns why elderly man shows up at work site every day and they form a bond

Changing someone’s life doesn’t have to be hard. For Ohio crane operator Shawn Beveridge, all it took was being friendly and acknowledging someone who was lonely.

His story about making friends with a senior citizen, who would come by and watch the progress on his construction site, ended up going viral.

Not only did Beveridge make the senior, whose name is Harold, feel a little less lonely, but he also warmed the hearts and inspired thousands with his act of kindness.

Beveridge kept seeing Harold sitting outside of a local nursing room in his wheelchair.

He would just watch the men on site and the cranes moving about for hours.

He kept returning every day to see the progress at the job site. But Beveridge couldn’t figure out why.

“I originally had thought to myself, ‘he’s just a curious old man wanting to enjoy his days outside versus being cooped up in his room,” Beveridge wrote on Facebook, according to Good News Network. “Well, after a couple days, I myself got curious, so I walked over and introduced myself to him.”

The man told Beveridge his name and that he too was a crane operator. Well, at least he used to be.

Harold had spent 50 years as a crane operator before his health condition forced him to quit and enter hospice.

The two men ended up chatting together for about two and a half hours.

“He said he enjoys seeing what he use to love to do for a living and never thought he’d ever be able to see or be around a crane again, let alone be so close to see one in action,” wrote Beveridge.

Beveridge was so inspired by Harold’s passion for his work that he decided to “make a deal” with the senior.

This deal would be mutually exclusive and help Beveridge with his education.

“Our deal is this: Harold ran cranes for over 50 years and no matter how good you think you are at something, there’s always more to learn,” Beveridge said.

Beveridge promised to sit with Harold every day after work so that Harold could critique him.

This would allow Harold to talk about something he enjoys, and Beveridge could improve his skill.

“In return, I would bring him a black coffee every morning for as long as I’m here and buy him lunch twice a week from wherever he chooses.,” Beveridge explained.

Harold immediately agreed to the deal.

“He originally wanted to be put on payroll, [but since] I explained to him that wasn’t possible I quickly came to what I thought was a fair agreement,” Beveridge added

Beveridge’s post ended up being shared more than 200,000 times.

“Always try to enlighten someone’s spirits. When God chooses to take this man home, I’m happy knowing that I’ve been placed here at this location to make his days better,” said Beveridge. “I’m happy with that.”
